This is likely the way it will be until AT&T Wireless drops the TDMA
network alltogether. Nokia is probably the only manufacturer that
will put R&D money into developing new handsets for what is
essentially a dead technology. Also, it is a way to encourage you to
buy/convert to
GSM. The upcoming merger would be difficult enough if
both AWE and Cingular only used
GSM, but as it is right now they're
merging two companies with six networks between them.
