IS there anywhere to download the latest firmware for a nokia 6230 ver.
4.28 and if there is how do you load it into the phone?
Telstra (australia) wants to charge me $40.00 for the upgrade. The phone
is only 1 week old! Good on ya telstra and good on ya nokia for your
poor service!

Don't really exist.

You can't. It's available on a secure part of the Nokia web site
that's accessible by Nokia service centres only.

Register your handset with Club Nokia and you should get the firmware
update free, provided you can detail to the Service Centre what issues
you are having with the release you have on your handset. (Shouldn't
be difficult - there are plenty to choose from!)
That's how it works in the UK anyway; sorry if Oz is different.

No, unless you're a Nokia Service Centre engineer. You need some VERY
expensive equipment to do it as well.
Choose a problem that is known in the firmware version you have and say that
the new firmware claims to fix this problem. It should be done for free as
you've had the phone less than a year and it doesn't do what it claims due
to one or more firmware bugs.
Just curious... you mentioned MMC in the subject but didn't say anything
about it in your post. Are you having MMC problems? If so, there seems to be
little improvement in later firmware versions. I have 4.28 (the latest) and
I still had to do all the usual tricks to get my MMC to work (renaming,
etc). What's your MMC problem?

Re: 6230 Firmware? - mmc & FAQs
If your phone is under warranty (wjich, at 1 week old should be),
firmware upgrades are free. Contact your nearest Nokia Care Centre.

I assume Telstra is a service provider like Vodafone or T-Mobile?
If I were you, I'd register my phone with Club Nokia (on the Nokia website)
Then phone up Club Nokia and ask for the nearest Nokia service centre to
you. They should upgrade it for you FOC as long as you can give a problem
with your phone currently (take your pick...)
NOTE: Be aware that the upgrade process will delete anything that is on your
phone, so unless the service centre specifically says they will save all you
settings and contacts, make sure you backup your phone before getting this
done!
I am about to get my 6230 firmware flashed from 3.15 to 4.28.
Anyone got any good reason why I shouldn't do this?
Thanks,
ChrisM.

No I can't find one, but can you inform us of what changes can you observe
after the upgrade?

Re: 6230 Firmware? - mmc & FAQs
THats right i did forget something. The phone won't recognise a 512meg
mmc. The card has been formatted, renamed, files loaded via card
reader, I stood on one leg and hopped around - I didn't think this would
actually help but it was worth a try.

Yeah, I've read reports that it works with some 512 cards, but this could be
coincidence down to firmware versions. I have the latest firmware (4.28) but
no 512 card to test it with. I only have a 256 one. Whenever anyone asks
these people who say they have a working 512mb card to confirm the card's
manufacturer and phone firmware version we seem to only get silence.
So I ask again - anyone out there using a 512MB card with a Nokia 6230, and
the card works? If so, what firmware are you using and what manufacturer of
card? Lets see if we can work out some common criteria for getting these
cards working.

3 hours? It took about 5 to 10 minutes for all of the upgrades I've had done
with several different models of phone. Are you sure it wasn't just 2 hours
50 waiting, then 10 minutes for the upgrade?

So I repeat again - use google - this subject has been done to death
elsewhere:

Yes, true, all those links have threads discussing this problem, I'm not
that daft! I've contributed to some. Google searches bring up those and
others. However, the threads are confusing at best, and contradict each
other in many places. I can't find one make + firmware version where a 512MB
MMC card works perfectly that can be *confirmed* by anyone else on any other
forums and *hasn't* been contradicted by somebody else. Each thread lists
one or more makes that "work", in the same thread or on others, people have
said those makes don't work. So that information is unreliable. Similarly
with the firmware + make combinations. People have stated that firmware X
works. Other people say they have firmware X but can't detect 512MB cards.
People have said make Y works, other people say they have problems with make
Y. Some people say they have firmware A and MMC make B, but have "problems".
Are these "problems" problems that can easily be solved, such as renaming
the card? They don't say. Are these "problems" the fact that it detects it
as a 256MB card, but you still get the full capacity? They don't say. Hence,
these threads nor Google answer my question.
I want a simple list that says something like:
MMC makes A, B and C work with firmwares X, Y and Z.
MMC make D works with firmware X but detects as wrong size.
You must rename the card if you have firmware Y and Z for it to work.
And after such a list (as I have seen similar but more vague ones) I *do
not* want so see a post saying:
"Yeah, I have MMC make A and firmware X, but it doesn't detect it and you
said it would work."
Nowhere can I find ANY threads, forums, or hits on Google or Google groups
where this concise, specific, reliable, confirmed, and non-contradicted
information exists.
Hence me re-asking the question.

You can ask & re-ask every day, and every day you will get a different
answer, it might not be the answer *you* want, but that's life.
If you buy a 512MB MMC from here:
http://www.mobymemory.com/proddetail...rod=mmc512_001
or here:
http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=107866
And it doesn't work on *your* phone, then they will refund you.
Clear enough for you?
