It is difficult. You have to press the little button down and slide it back.
Took me long time to get it right.

Press that little silver rectangle towards the bottom. Its a button!
Whilst pressing it, slide the whole back cover up a centimetre or so,
then lift it up from the top.

It's the front cover I find hard to remove!

I had a huge problem with that! Disengage the closing mechanism (even very
slightly), place the phone between the palms of your hands and then place
your hands between your knees. Then apply inward pressure to the phone and
move your hands in such a way as the phone should open, as if rubbing your
hands together. It works on my 6230, my lawyer's 6230 and my dentist's
    6230!!!! ))

i take it between thumb index finger of the left hand, with the
middle finger supporting it from underneath (against the keys). now
use the same thumb to instead press the silver button, pressing it
    against the middle finger.

now use your right hand's thumb's nail and put it just underneath
the black thingie that stands out, which hosts the camera. pull with
your right hand away from your left hand.

it should come off easily. takes me about a second by now.

    Chris Blunt....

Nice comment!! It seemed like it was going that way. :-)

Strange, how something so insignificant as "trying to get the back cover off
my phone", becomes a thread, and a cry for help!

Don't get me wrong, I have the same problem. It's not as easy as one would
    expect..

Does anyone have the added problem/niggle with the fact that when the back
cover is in place, it doesn't seem as if it's tightly closed?, and when
using the phone, some movement (slight) can be felt with the back cover,
    especially whilst texting.

It's enough to annoy me.. (how sad!)

    ;-)

Mine is as tight as a drum, which pleases me no end. My friend has a 6220,
and the back cover on that is loose and has a real cheap feel about it
    because of this.

Don't know what colour covers you have; mine is the brushed aluminium look
supplied with the 6230 in Australia.

    Black (as supplied).

Maybe I'll get new covers, in case that is the problem, but when I recently
had phone flashed, and mentioned about the cover having an "insecure" feel
about it, the engineer (Nokia) claimed it was a design fault. :-(

    Cheers for your respnse.

Actually I don't seem to have much difficulty at all with removing or
replacing the cover on my 6230. Perhaps that's just because I've got
used to removing covers from previous Nokias I've owned which seem to
work the same way. I also notice that slight movement when the cover
is on. My 6100 does that too.

Sorted the "niggly loose back cover" issue.

Bought a replacement cover, and all is well. :-)

Interesting thought - why do Nokia supply different colour covers in varios
parts of the world for some models.

    6230 in Oz is silver.

6310i (no longer available - (IMO the best simple Nokia ever) was gold front
    in Oz & Asia.

    May well be others.

Something to do with some colours being "lucky" for the Asian market?
