    Hi,

Since installing a new monitor, the IRDA taskbar icon no longer appears in
the system tray when I connect my 6230 via infra red.

Neither does the wireless link icon appear on the desktop...

Nor do the connect and disconnect sounds occur...

I can't believe that the monitor and the Irda issue are connected...but I
did change USB port for the adapter in doing so - same hub, just different
    port.

Unimstalling the adapter and re-installing it makes no difference.

The phone does connect and PC Suite works fine - but I'd just like some
visual confirmation that it's working...often if the phone backlight is off,
I can't tell whether a connection has been made or not.

    Si.

This happens to me, i restart. There is a way to check if it's connected,
    see below:

It sometimes happens, try restarting, and make sure the 6230 driver is
installed. Search the nokia website for '6230 driver', it's located on the
    6230 section of nokia.com.

To install it/make sure the 6230 is seen by teh system, even if the
system-tray lies, then right click on 'my computer' - click on
'properties' --->go to the 'hardware' tab ----> click on 'device
manager' ----> a new window pops up.

On that new window, find 'standard modem via IRDA link' under 'modems' -
    Scout about, it's there.

Right click on the standard modem thingy, click 'update driver', then make
sure you don't let the system find it - YOU specify where it is yourself by
browsing through the wee window that will appear. Point it to the 6230
driver i've told you to download, and then that should be it. Restart your
comp to be on the safe side. Now hwen you connect your 6230 via infrared it
should always tell you, and it'll also allow custom-modem options, such as
link-speed for connections, GPRS connections if you've installed hte
    nokia-PC suite software, etc

It's there, just no taskbar icon.

I'm not looking to use the 6230 as a modem - just wonder why the IRDA icon
    doesn't appear when sync'ing?

It's a flaw in xp2's DLL (dynamic link library), it calls certain procedures
that are to be incurred, relative to other procedures; it works 90% of the
    time.

    It's microsoft, it's your choice

Unannounced feature on W2K - if you [re]start with a modem switched off and
then switch it on, W2K will not use it, even if it is installed. Similar
    problem with IRDA etc.
