Yes, you have to update your firmware because the new version (5.24 or 5.27)
    will fix it.

No it doesn't, not on the 6230.

Playlists work great? For the MMC card? I don't know. Yes, they work,
if you know the magic trick.

But that magic trick is clumsy and tedious.

First, copy the MP3s through the card reader. Put the MMC back in the
phone. Connect the phone to the PC suite. Create empty playlists.
Finally add the desired tunes to the playlists.

For somebody who wants to frequently load a few hundred megabytes of
MP3s to his MP3 player, this is pretty unacceptable.

Firmware 5.24 has been enhanced to recognize all MP3s on the MMC
    automatically. That's a big improvement.

Not that it's perfect, far from it. If you have, say, 100 MP3 files on
your phone, you get one giant flat playlist without a notion of
directories (albums). If you want to skip to the 7th album, you may
find yourself hitting the skip button 70 times.

Considering ergonomic aspects, the 6230 is a lousy MP3 player, even with
    firmware 5.24.

i don't have any magic tricks and it works very easily.

i don't do any of this. I simply connect the phone to the pc via
cable, load up Nokia Audio Manager, create a folder on the mmc card,
create a playlist and drag in the fiiles i want on my pc. then simply
transfer to the phone/mmc. i have currently got a folder of various
music, and several more seperate folders which are albums. i have a
playlist for each and it works a treat.

i've got roughly 400meg of music on my 512mb mmc, this should last me
a while. changing it is easy.

I'd agree with the OP. I've had a 6230 since release day in Europe
    and love it.

However, even though the audio quality is very good and you can use
MMCs up to 1 gig (making it better than most solid state players) the
actual _ergonomics_ of mp3 playback are awful.

It's a real waste of great hardware. Nokia should pull their
finger out and make a more ergonomic mp3 player on the phone. It
should be easy to select and play individual mp3s and playlists. A
good random facility is needed and directory skip functions.

Sure, I know. I should have mentioned it. This is the simple but slooow
way, copying the MP3s via PC suite through BT or IRDA ur DKU-2.

For 10 Albums, this this takes an hour or more. With a card reader you
can do it in 5 minutes.

If you load significant amounts of music files frequently, this is the
only feasible way FOR ME. But with the card reader, you have to do the
    tedious procedure that I described.

Yeah, but you never seem to change large amounts at a time, right? In
this case you're probably ok. >

I take it you don't have firmware 5.24? An I take it you don't have
any experiece with the ergonomics of a good MP3 player?

Playlists are fine but the dang thing should be acceptably usable
without playlists, like any good MP3 player.

    ok

What we'd need is simply a way to play a specific folder.

Or an option for "Gallery/open in sequence" to play complete tunes.
I'd say 99.9% of the required code is in the phone already.

Sure - but then the backlight doesn't go out (unless they've fixed
that on later firmware) running down your battery extra fast. Not
    much use really.

Playlists are a PITA to implement. You can either spend ages
fiddling around making them on the PC and then transferring them
along with your MP3s via the PC application suite (forget about using
a memory card reader for fast transfer if you want playlists) ... Or
mess around with the 'hack' of creating empty playlists and then
adding files to them. You should be able to create a playlist on the
phone and add easily add files/directories to it.

It would be so easy for Nokia to really improve in this area. With
the MMC support they really need a better way to navigate large
    numbers of music files.

    Right.

But then, you should also be able to create playlists on the PC and
transfer them onto the MMC as a normal file. As opposed to the currently
implemented kluge of playlists being in phone memory outside of the
    accessible file system.
