I ran this by Nokia and they wound up answering a question I didn't ask, so
I thought I'd try my question here. As the subject line indicates, I have a
Nokia 5165 that I've had for about two years. In that time, I have not had
to replace the battery. I recently charged the battery and noticed that,
where the battery icon on the display normally has five bars above it when
fully charged, it now has four. Does this mean I need to replace the
battery? Thanks for any advice.

I have two batterys for that phone laying around the house. (Switched
to GSM last year.) If you want to send me a padded mailer with enough
postage on it to send to you I'll give them to you. Let me know via private
E-Mail.

What it probably means is the calibration circuitry in either the battery
or the phone is changing value. There is a resistor in the battery that
the phone reads to determine the type and capacity of the battery, if that
or the reference resistor in the phone start changeing then the indicated
battery charge--the bars--may not display correctly and the battery may not
be charging fully. The best solution is to send the phone, the charger,
and the battery to Nokia for a check-up. If there is nothing wrong with
the phone's charging circuitry or the battery the phone will be retuned and
recalibrated. Probably they will give you a new battery and charger in any
case. Unless they've changed policy was to replace charger and battery for
charger-related customer complaints. Since the battery and the charger
were life-time warranted there should be no charge for them. If only the
software needs tweaking in the phone there should be no charge for that
either. From the age of the phone it is obviously not in warranty so if
any other repairs are necessary they will contact you with quote
information and tell you what is wrong. On my line, when I worked at
Nokia, if it was something simple I would usually tell the tech to go ahead
and fix the phone and not charge for it, especially if the problem was a
known deficiency of the phone. Hope this helps...
