    Remember this one?

A neighbour has asked me to unlock a NK402 so I dug out the mbus/fbus cable,
plugged it into the old com port on my pc, dusted off the very dated
software cd and clicked away. Unlocked all four locks. Nice. Only thing
is the Orange SIM still wont register.

As far as I am aware the phone is "all above board" and used to be used
perfectly well on the O2 UK network.

I reckon it's down to the firmware version and something to do with the
phone not being dual band perhaps? 900 O2 instead of 1800 Orange? Ring any
bells - excuse the pun )

    Details...
    NK402
    Was on O2 UK Network
Now needs to be used on Orange UK Network
    v05.28
    18.02.00
    NSE-1
Used NokTool by Rolis v1.8 (and tried other software)
All locks have been opened according to the screen and the phone.

As a temporary measure I have given the phone's owner an O2 PAYG SIM to be
getting on with. Hopefully that'll register on the network just fine.

Would be grateful of any help.

Those phones were only single band. There were 900 and 1800 models, but if
you have one it won't work on the other.

    Exactly.

    Can't be done.

If they want a cheap and cheerful phone, get a Nokia 1100, they were less
than 30 quid from Argos or Woolworths or somewhere not long ago.

Like you say its Only a single band phone I'm affraid, it doesn't matter
about the firmware, it will still only work on the lower of the GSM bands,
O2, Vodafone etc .. Nokia did do another model which was usable on the upper
    bands.
Sounds like somebody has changed the Facia's cause I seem to remember the
orange version of that phone was the NK402. Think O2 or cellnet as it was
just used the straight nokia numbering system.. No doubt somebody will be
along shortly to put us right..

LOL ) Yeah 5140 I think it was called 402 normally, then NK402 on Orange
(UK) - at least that's how I remember it anyway. Must be about 6 years ago.
Not long really but light years in phone time )

Thanks for the info - really appreciate it.

Do those 1100 have the same connectors for the car cradle? I will have a
look when I get two ticks but must dash just now.

    Have fun!

There were several versions of it - 5140, 5146 etc. but only Orange decided
to use a completely different numbering convention and call it a 402.

    Nope. You'll need a 402 (5110), 602 (6110), 6150, 6210, 7110, 6310 or 6310i
to fit a Cark91 car kit. Bear in mind that the 402 and 602 are both single
    band handsets.
