I am travelling abroad soon and I heard that it was better to get a
European phone rather than bringing your own phone over there and have
massive charges. Anyways, I am looking for a
NOKIA 3310 GMS EUROPEAN CELLPHONE. If anyone has this model can you
please contact me right away. Pick up must be done in downtown Toronto
or Scarborough. Thanks!

What phone do you have now? if your phone will work in Europe then I
would suggest you take it with you and purchase a PAYG sim card in
each of the European countries you visit.
The next best option would be, as you suggest, to buy a phone that
will work in Europe - but to save money you will also need to purchase
a sim card for each country
The last option, the one you've sensibly abandoned, is to take your
current phone and roam.

Only if it is not subsidy-locked to the SIM of his US carrier.

All (?) of the UK mobile companies lock their PAYG phones - but they
are relatively striaghtforward to unlock (certainly Nokia's are) - is
this not the case in N America?

Given that a large proportion of US mobiles (sorry cellphones) are
CDMA/TDMA rather than GSM (and also analogue) and don't have SIM cards at
all, it's far from straightfoward..!
