    Hi

Its the wife's Birthday soon, so I thought I would buy her a new phone.
She does not want anything fancy but just basic stuff on it (camera etc)

    What do you recommend?

    Thanks
    Tim

we need WAY more info than that. what provider do you use? how much do
you want to spend? where are you located? are you prepared to sign a
contract for another one or two years, or are you willing to pay full price
    for phone with no contract?

The Nokia 6680 is a great phone, but I would not recommend it to the
average user because it is a bit too advanced for them.

My preference would be to recommend the Nokia 6230 or 6230i, very easy
to use and has pretty much all the features the average user would use.

    Hi
    Thanks for the replies
The money isn't such a problem and it would be on "pay as you go"
possibly on the "how it looks" then what it does.
Like I said, colour screen and a camera is enough bells and whistles.

I have always had nokia so I am thinking that this is the way to go for "her
    in doors"

how can you guys recommend phones when you dont even know
the carrier?? if he's on cingular he'd be looking at a 6230b (and
i don't think he can get one for free unless the pricing has dropped
in the past couple of months) and certainly not free for a pay as
you go program with no contracts.

What is stopping him getting any GSM phone and slapping in his wife's
SIM card. That's what we do here in Australia, provided it isn't locked
    it isn't a problem!

Because in the US, different carriers use different technologies (some
completely incompatible CDMA vs GSM) and even the same technologies
with different frequencies (GSM 850 vs GSM 1900).

Provided the service is GSM and he buys a US model then there is no
reason why it won't work. No need to stuff around with another long
term contract if he doesn't want to.

He may well want to go to the carrier and see what plans they have on
offer for a new phone. But if the Nokia 6230 is available, then I would
recommend he consider it because of it's ease of use and features.

But he hasn't told us what carrier it is, that's my point. If he has
Verizon or Sprint, he can't use a GSM phone. If he has Cingular,
    he'll need a GSM phone that supports both 850 and 1900. It's
just not as simple in the US as it is everywhere else in the world
unforunately. Since the OP mentioned pay-as-you-go, it
makes *ME* think Cingular, but that may not be the case.
If it is Cingular, then the 6230 (b version, not i) is a great choice.

Looking at the headers it appears that the OP is UK based.
