Hi all. I would appreciate your help with a story I am working on. I want to
find out "who is Mr/Mrs Average SMS User?" If you use SMS on your mobile
phone, please reply to this with your age, whether you are at
school/college/university/work/unemployed, and whether you consider yourself
a light, moderate, or heavy user of SMS. You can respond by replying to this
post in the newsgroup or by emailing me at sms(at)celosia.co.uk . I don't
want or need names or any other personal information, I'll delete all emails
once I've noted the 3 points mentioned above, and I won't spam you, sell
your email addy or anything nasty like that. Also if anyone knows of any
websites with this kind of information, the URLs would be appreciated too.

    Thank you,

    Helen.

(if you see this in more than one newsgroup, please only reply once)

I don't know about your country, but here in Finland your question sounds a
bit odd. I think we don't have any average SMS user, since they are a very
common way of messaging to all mobile phone users.

As far as I've seen, here children from age of 6-8+, teenagers, students,
workers, directors and all the way to retirees send and receive SMS
messages. I know 70-year-olds who send SMS messages and believe that more
elderly people would use them if phones weren't so complicated to use and
    very small.

But if you somehow want to find out what Joe Average thinks about SMS
messages, I think newsgroups are not the right channel for that. You'd also
have to define which part of the world you are studying since there seems to
be great difference in how much people use SMS messages. For example my
acquaintances and friends in the U.S. don't seem to understand SMS messaging
as it's used here in Europe.

You'd also have define what's "light", "moderate" or "heavy" use. I send
maybe 30 messages per month, but I know that many teenagers send them
hundreds in a month. Here in Finland we even have one operator that offers
1000 SMS messages per month for a fixed price, but it's limited to five (5)
    GSM numbers.

But here's my contribution to your unrealistic survey:

    Age: 25
    Status: work
    SMS use: moderate

To be honest this is such a small thing in the scheme of things... The main
character uses SMS a lot and I'd thought I'd do a little research on "who"
that is nowadays - what age/occupational status is a heavy user likely to
be. I had my thoughts on this but fancied doing a little research on it.

Right now it's just something I'm writing in my spare time, might never be
    published, I don't know.

I'd say that while many people are mobile phone users nowadays, from kids
right up to elderly people, the range of people who make use of the SMS
facility is probably mainly limited to those at the lower end of the scale.
I just wanted to check whereabouts on the scale the majority of heavy users
actually were, whether they were kids, young teens, older teens, twenties...

I probably won't specify the setting in the story, but I am in the UK so if
I do end up setting it anywhere, it'll probably be the UK.

I am just wanting a rough idea, so I put what you consider yourself to be.
Personally I'd say I'm a light user, I reply to texts and occasionally send
one out to friends (when I have credit on my phone!). Moderate, I'd say
would be regular usage, from 5-a-week up to a few a day; heavy would be more
than that, especially where you use your phone to organise your whole social
life and would be lost without your mobile phone. But that's just my views,
I don't want to use numbers to define usage.

The "1000 messages" offer sounds good, I think most people I know could pick
out up to 5 people they text a lot. Here in the UK that vast majority pay
10p per message although some plans give you a number of free messages per
    month.

In Croatia...very, very have usage of SMS, it kinda makes you feel it's
cheaper, even thought when you send like 10-20 SMS to finish a disucssion
with someone, it's not :-) I'm 21, and I use it alot. I'm on college, and
have Nokia 7650. SMS is fun, and often I use it if I don't want to disturb
someone, so that they can reply when they want, when they'll have
time...just one more positive thing about it.

    Hope this helps

From what I understand in Europe and Asia SMS is very big
among the young. It probably isn't typical here in the USA,
but none of the under thirty people I know with cell phones
use SMS. On the other hand about half of my fifty something
friends with cell phones would be moderate SMS users by your
definitions. I usually send about 10 SMS per week and receive
about twice that. I, and a couple of my friends who are also
in their fifties, find that perhaps as much as ninety percent
of our cell phone use is for SMS.
