I used to have a 7210 but was recently stolen. Luckily, I kept a
backup of the phonebook (which was rather large and detailed) on my
notebook, so now I'm shopping for another similar Nokia, as the 7210
pleased me (except perhaps the incoming voice quality, which was
crappy). I liked & used all 7210's features, and the ones missing were
probabil voicetags, better security (like motorola) & bluetooth. But
you can't have it all, that's life, and the price was right (being a
Fido customer for a while I got it for CDN$200).
Now that my phone was stolen, I was going to reorder it, but noticed
that Fido is now offering the 5100, which has a similar feature set,
plus a few extra bells and whistles. The 5100 is bigger and heavier
according to the website, but seems more resistant, has a flashlight
and some more apps, including a thermometer and sound meter, and
according to a review I read it adjusts the sound level based on the
ambient sound. Furthermore, strangely enough the 5100 is cheaper than
the 7210 by $100, even though it has more features. The only reason I
can think of is looks, but that is subjective...
I'd like to ask, for anybody who had a chance to try both:
1. What is the relative incoming voice quality?
2. Can the phone withstand windsurfing (and the implicit occasional
water dip)?
3. Which buttons are easier to use?
Which one would you choose?

The incoming voice quality is identical because it is the same phone, except as
you mentioned, for the extra bells and whistles on the 5100.

Sorry, it's not waterproof. Just the odd spray may be endured.
>3. Which buttons are easier to use?
Although I detest the configuration of the key-pad on the 7210 it's easier to
use than the 5100. It is a Dickens of a problem to scroll with the 5100
especially in cool weather. i.e. below about 20ēC. The sleeve becomes extremely
stiff thus loosing the required flexibility.

Of the two I prefer the 7210 because of scrolling difficulties and total lack of
tactile buttons on the 5100.
In addition, opening the casing of the 5100 will surely limit it's useful
lifespan.
The 7200 is a neater package and easier to carry on one's person.
Since Q 2 was tabled, your choice may well be determined by the environment in
which the phone is intended

Virtually identical.

Absolutely not.

IMHO the 5100 wins it by a gnats - they both have abysmal keypads.

Personal choice..... I'd have neither, there are far superior phones from
other manufacturers on the market. If I had to choose from those two
though, I'd take the 5100.
