I've seen that a DKU-5 data cable is available for the 3585i for purposes of
linking to a PC and possibly utilizing the phone as a wireless modem. I've
got three questions:
1. Is the wireless modem function just a theory or has anyone ever made it
work?
2. Do special arrangements need to be made with either the cell company or
the ISP?
3. Why is the cable so darn expensive? I'd pay $30-40 to utilize wireless
internet on occasion but I don't want to pay that much just to download some
ringtones.

Once you get the cable there's a full suite of software that you can
download from Nokia's site for free, including drivers for the cable.
(windows computers only, though). See:

Knowing this it's pretty obvious that the cable is priced like it is to
subsidise develoment of the software.
I haven't tried the SW yet (i've got a 3585i and an on the fence about
putting down the $$), but I've looked through the online manuals and it's
quite tempting.
