Hi all,
When a non-orange (uk) SIM is placed in a 6310 originally on orange, it asks
for a code of some sort. Won't let me do anything else with the phone until
this code is put in. It is not looking for the PUK or security. I have
forgotten what the actual code it was asking for! Phone is at work I am
home. Knew I should have written it down! Sorry.
Any help gratefully appreciated.

This "code of some sort" is called network or operator lock, and is
implemented by network operators and providers to prevent people from using
subsidised phones with any other SIM cards than the one(s) issued by the
network operator's / provider's, or even to prevent people from using the
phone with any other card than the one that the phone has been bundled with.
I'm not quite sure about the legal side of removing such a lock from a phone
in the UK. However, there are certainly people in this forum who can unlock
such a phone, and are able to help you in return for a fee.
HTH.
Kind regards,
Olaf

Or, given that it's a 6310i (DCT4), you can download the free DCT4 unlocking
software from http://www.unlocksmith.co.uk and unlock it with code 5 (for
Orange UK).
It's perfectly legal.

Re: 6310i
HI,
Thanks for the link, I have downloaded the app and created a code. According
to the calculator, I have to enter 3 codes? in the order shown?
Or do I just enter the one that ends +5# ?
Cheers.

Re: 6310i
Read the instructions further (not only the ones on the www) and I should
only use code 7 for Orange UK if my understanding is correct?
Can you confirm this please?
Thanks,
C.

I understood it as follows:
The code generator program generates codes ending in 1 to 7. There are codes
1 to 7 as detailed below.
Depending on which network and phone you have one or more of the 4 locks may
be locked.
Codes 1 to 4 unlock locks 1 to 4 respectively.
Code 5 unlocks locks 1+2.
Code 6 unlocks locks 1+2+3.
Code 7 unlocks locks 1+2+3+4.
Orange in the UK just lock 1 and 2. All other UK providers only lock number
1.
So, to unlock a UK Orange phone enter code ending in 5.
To unlock Voda, T-Mobile, Virgin and O2 use the code ending in 1.
Some people say use code 7 as this unlocks all locks in one go. This works
on a lot of (most?) phones. But some phones require you use the unlock code
corresponding to whichever locks are actually locked. On these phones, if
you enter code 7 when not all locks are locked then you get the same error
as if you entered a wrong code.
You have 5 tries to get the right code, so for Orange in UK I'd try code 7,
then code 5. If they don't work you could try code 1. After that I'd leave
it - so be VERY careful to enter the codes correctly.
