Do the aerial boosters you drop under your battery really work? I have seen
them advertised on auction sites and wondered if there was any truth in
    their claims.

    Thanks

The one I bought for £3 didn't. As I live in a poor signal area, I thought
it was worth spending the £3 just to see if it did work or not. Use the
money more wisely and go buy some beer.

They never work. In fact they interfere somewhat with the signal.

When I looked at the design of them I figured that the metallic lines of the
aerial booster COULD act as a parasitic element (reflector), similar to what
you might find in a Yagi array (such as a rooftop TV aerial). However, it
would have to be positioned EXACTLY in the right place and distance away
from your built in aerial (tolerance of 0.4mm on GSM1800, 0.8mm on GSM900)
and it would make the aerial directional so you'd have to line it up towards
the transmitter whenever you used your phone (in the same way that TV
aerials have to be rotated to point towards the transmitter). However,
having said that it certainly wouldn't make a very good Yagi array as the
internal aerial isn't going to be setup for a Yagi.

Two of my friends have bought them. One said it made no noticeable different
whatsoever to either quality or signal strength. The other said that if
    anything it made it worse.
