Tis sadly true. but then, if it's DCT-4, I thought the IMEI was (rightly so)
impossible to change outside an NSC, so not too much of a concern. and it's
also worth noting that it's the only way to unlock the phone. there are
plenty of trustworthy ones out there. (not the free ones generally) many are
    recommended here all the time.

    Close, but no cigar. :-)

From what I know, DCT4 IMEI's are better protected than DCT3, but not
impossible to tamper with. Although now illegal in the UK (and carrying
very hefty penalties), I'm sure it is still going on, and the information
and equipment required is available even from some well respected sources.

    > so not too much of a concern.

Not true. Just because the IMEI was assigned to a DCT4 handset doesn't mean
that some unscrupulous toe-rag (one word or two?) can't use it to re-porgram
a DCT3 handset, or anything else for that matter.

    > and it's
    > also worth noting that it's the only way to unlock the phone.

Cable methods can also be used, but not so conveniently I'd agree.

Absolutely. Just be aware that posting your IMEI on a forum is as bad (if
not worse in one case I can think of) as posting it on usenet.

Let me get 1 thing straight my site is NOT a forum and IMEI are not stored
on my computer once I have generated the unlock code I delete the email with
the IMEI number. Also the unlock software I have got will do the latest
nokias inc the N-Gage and 6600. I am getting sick and tired of people saying
"oh no you can't do that" well I have done it and will continue to unlock
new nokias as I have successfully unlocked 3 N-Gages and 6 6600's so please
if you have nothing more to add to that please don't post replies.

Wow, whoopee, I'm sure we're all impressed. Virtually all of the regular
posters have access to exactly the same software, and in many cases far
superior software. Again, what is your point?

So what? All the established unlockers (ourselves included) can do exactly
the same, but we don't take issue with anyone correcting incorrect
    information.

    > so please
    > if you have nothing more to add to that please don't post replies.

Oh do grow up! This is a public forum, and anyone is free to post - even if
you don't like the replies. As for having anything to add, what exactly
have you contributed to ACN apart from spam?

Also, would you please not top-post, it is bad manners after all.

My, what a professional attitude! Would you like some vinegar to go with
that massive chip you appear to be carrying?

You contribute nothing to the group but adverts for your site - what would
you call that? Spam? Hmm... thought so.

You're trying to set up an unlocking business, and resort to personal
attacks when it's pointed out to you that you have little if any knowledge
of the subject at hand - great way to attract potential customers!

Grow up and realise that just because you say something, it doesn't
necessarily make it true. Whilst you're at it, moderate your language and
cease the personal attacks before abuse reports start flying.

And could you PLEASE show a little respect for the rest of the group and not
    top-post.

BTW, congratulations on ignoring every point made in my last post.

my my what big teeth you've got.

ok maybe you're not a spammer. That description has been superseded by the
above post- which says you are a troll and a script kiddie. now spamming is
stupid enough to win a Darwin award, but being a troll is even worse.
somebody disagreed with you, so you decide to hurl insults. wow. now incase
you are as new to this as you are to unlocking, then you will need some
help, so I'll tell you that your next post here will be another insulting
(well it's meant to be but it won't actually insult me) post directed at me
as well as anyone else who disagrees with you (so everyone then) and will
proclaim your righteousness and this mythical ability to unlock DCT-5
phones. I'm sure you can figure out the wording yourself, and prove how much
of a troll you really are. On the other hand you could abandon your already
sunk ship, and make your next post an interesting, and above all relevant
one. whats left of your reputation is in your hands, improve it or just put
    it out of it's misery

I haven't seen it around at all, while it was all over the place with older
phones. perhaps the threat of legal action is working, and they are hiding
it a little more. I take great pleasure in the fact that my phone can't
easily be used after someone theives it, though I would prefer something
more fun - like it explodes in their face.

I thought they were handset type specific kind of like batch numbers, or is
that just an acccounting method? I could be wrong (again) but I thought
there was something that prevented the wrong IMEI type (the first few digits
or something) from being assigned to the phone.

They are specific, with type identifiers.

Unfortunately not. I've seen quite a few older phones with IMEI's cloned
from other manufacturers. So long as the IMEI is unique and not
blacklisted, ther doesn't appear to be a problem. It would be nice to see
blacklisting of invalid IMEI's, but the logistics of such a move would
    surely be a nightmare.
