Hi,
I'm looking to buy a new mobile phone, and I'm looking for a cheap model,
preferably Nokia but other makes are not entirely out of the question.
The only thing I'll be using it for is to phone and be phoned, I have
absolutely no interest in SMS, MMS, Wap, digital camera mobiles and other
crappy gimmicks and I'll never ever use anyway.
What I do want, however, is a mobile with a battery that last as long as
possible, and doesn't deteriorate by charging (unlike my current battery,
which I have to change after only one year of mild usage).
Anybody any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
Princess Morgiah

Re: Can anybody recommend me a mobile?
If you are on a TDMA network, the Nokia 6360 will work great. If you are on
a GSM network, then the Nokia 6310i or 6590i would be a great choice. The
6590i adds GSM 850. Check out www.phonescoop.com and do the phone search.

Thanks for your quick reply. I'm on a GSM network.
Both phones have way too many options (features I'll never use) and are way
too expensive. I've found the 6590 for 289$ and the 6310i for 349$ (for a
phone!!).
I'm looking for a simplified version of for example my old 3210 which
already had way too many options by the way. Max amount to spend: 100$, no
phone is worth more for me.
Thanks,
Princess Morgiah

I doubt very much if you can buy a new phone these days that doesn't do most
of the things you've mentioned. SMS Messaging for example is considered a
standard feature these days, just like you'd be hard pressed to find a car
without a radio in it, even if you would never use it.
If making/receiving phone calls and battery life are your only concerns buy
the cheapest phone you can find that has a Li-Ion or Li-Pol battery in it.

You need to look on ebay. If those phones are too much, then I HIGHLY
recomment the 8290. It is STILL one of the best phones I have ever used.
You can get them fairly cheap, and get it unlocked for free at nokiafree.org
and you'll be on your way. I have it as a back up to my 6340i.

Righton! Phones are for communication. The only thing about these
silly extras is the big boyz will now toy with phones instead of
girlz. Save you girlz lotsa heartaches. LOL!

Thanks for the tip, but I never buy second hand. Ebay is out of the
question.

True, but at least with cars you can get a discount if you drop the radio.
I'm not saying that the phone MUST come without SMS, I'm just saying that
I'm not willing to spend money I could spend on useful stuff on gimmicks I
won't use.

Thanks, I'll look into that. I only need the phone in an emergency, so that
is indeed the only concern I have.

Re: Can anybody recommend me a mobile?
Hello,
I don't know about the battery (perhaps several batteries available as
options), but what about the 2100 ? A true basic phone, monophonic tones
(beeps like a 5110), monochrome display, little & light, dual band
GSM900/1800, comes with a vibrator. Almost as basic as a 3310, just smaller.
A friend of mine paid 130EUR for it last week, brand new with no contract
("nacked") in a french supermarket, you may find it cheaper on the Web.
I guess a GSM900/1800 is a good choice for you, as you seem to write from
Belgium, aren't you ?

Belgium it is! This might indeed be what I was after - thanks!

There are many dealers on ebay. I'm talking NEW PHONES. I bought my 6340i
from a Cingular dealer for $78 and had it unlocked for $2, all on ebay.

I see. I'm a software developer and as a result of that, I never shop
online.
Excuse my ignorance, but what do you mean by 'had it unlocked' ?

Erm... and your point is?

Most, if not all, pay as you go or pay in advance phones are locked to only
work on the supplying network's system. Unlocking them, simply allows the
use of a SIM card from any network operator.

My point is that I know what can go wrong with online transactions, and that
I also know how very easy it is for malicious users to take advantage of
online systems. The same reason why I don't trust wireless stuff, credit
cards, and a lot of others stuff.

I see - never bought a locked phone, then.
