    Hi,
I intend visiting the U.S. and would like to buy a pre-paid cell phone
with u.s. sim card there, that I could use in Australia when I come back
with a pre-paid Aust sim card here.
I think U.S. is tri band and here is dual.
I just want a cheap one as a second phone, dont need camera, or wap.
What kind of money do they charge and what models available?????,
    without a card.

    Thanks Roo

You will need an unlocked tri band GSM 900/1800/1900 phone for it to work in
    both countries.

Nokia 6310i fits the bill nicely, if you can find one for a reasonable
    price.

You don't say where in the US you're going or for how long. Bear in mind
that not all of the USA uses GSM and coverage outside major cities is
somewhat patchy if there is any at all. If you're going to be there for any
length of time better to get the same type of phone as whatever network has
the strongest signal in your area uses..! Also bear in mind that in the US
you pay for incoming calls as well as outgoing.

    Roo,
One of the best deals going on the net is the Ericsson R520m. The phone is
feature packed, some features still not even found on todays latest models.
Bluetooth, WAP, GPRS and GSM (many of todays phones make it difficult to
choose between GPRS and GSM WAP, as in if GPRS is available, it uses GPRS
period) EMAIL Client (allows you to setup phone to dial into your ISP and
send /receive mail), BlueTooth, Vibe Alert, Speaker phone (Very good option
and still rare) Infra Red and a Motion Sensor (set alarm clock mode and when
it goes off you wave your hand over phone and it turns off) The phone is
sleek and thin candy bar style and has Ericssons World Wide Warranty. So in
short, for about $60 USD or $83 AUD plud freight, You got a helluva
inexpensive yet quality phone. Check it out

    Hi,
travelling to southern/northen California and Nevada and really only need it
    to make
hotel/motel/show bookings mostly 1800 numbers and for emergency calls if
    necessary.
Probably use it for about three weeks, but could give it to my wife on
    return to update
    her phone.
    Thanks Roo

I disagree. Almost every new Nokia has a speakerphone built in. So not quite
    rare anymore.

One way I haven't been ripped off yet: by some idiot in America who promises
to send a phone if i western union money across or similar. Then chooses not
    to. Rather not.

Re: U.S. Prepaid to work in Australia????

Where did America come into play? I guess when your so busy being an
opinioned expert you don't cover all the bases. FLASH, EBAY is in Australia
now!! Hence the reason for AUD prices in my posting. And because some of the
newer NOKIA's have a speakerphone, does that lessen the validity of my
choice for THIS phone? I noticed while quick to disparage, you refrained to
offer an intelligent alternative fror the poster. Why is that? But then
again, one way I keep from being misinformed is by not paying attention to
some idiot in Australia. Or should I say "wanker"?
BTW, you don't have a relative in OZ named Rod Speed do you? Another
unfortunate by product of an otherwise EXCELLENT country.
