I recommend to seriously *NOT* post your IMEI there. It may be used for
criminal purposes. If not by the board owners some passer by.

How can you trust ANY company offering this type of service in the group
then? How do you know who or what is behind any web page - the Data
Protection Act protects most criminals!

But these are publicly viewable and therefore a ready list for any would be
criminals who want to clone your IMEI. Obviously you can trust someone who
has got good feedback in the past, phone unlocking seems to still be a
little legal grey area.

You can do Whois lookup to see who owns a website/is responsible for
registering it and the details they gave.

Criminals don't fish for IMEIs to use, they have their own IMEI generators.

And the point of trusting the WHOIS of any website would be......?
Hell, anyody can register a website. I could register a website, would
you trust me with your jewels? I'm trustworthy - if you don't believe
me just ask me.

But surely there's an advantage to having a Genuine IMEI used by someone?

Not much point, a genned imei works the same as a genuine one...because this
ain't online gaming where only the genuine keys for the game work.

I'm aware of that but the networks look at IMEI's.

There's more chance of winning the lottery. Seriously, the only thing that
could be done is for someone to copy the IMEI, in which case theres an even
smaller chance of anything happening because of it anyway.

O2 said a couple of years ago that they estimate around 10% of the phones on
the network had at least 2 IMEI's the same.

No-one cares, really. It's about time people stopped saying this rubbish.

The only place I can think of displaying your IMEI number might be a
bad idea is Thailand. Cause if IMEI is not on the network system,
than they will not let you connect or something. So having a "real"
IMEI there will be worth something.

actually that is a point, say I gave my number on a forum and someone
than "clone it" and register it with T-Mobile (I on Orange.) Two
months later the other person reports to T-Mobile it is stolen.
Wouldn't my phone go down as well now cause of the blacklisting, hence
that might be the danger posting your number in a public place for
someone in UK

Yes it would....

No-one would bother to clone an IMEI number. If they are going to change it
then they'll just change 1 digit or just make up a random IMEI.

I Know a chap who takes great delight in going thru the forums and groups
were UK imei's are posted, he then programs one of his spare nokia's using
NokTool18 then pops in a sim card ( 1 from each network over a period of
time) and waits.. its not long before the phone is knocked from the network.
( he says orange are the quickest).. obviously it will only work if the
other persons phone is switched on at the same time, but a good reason not
to post ur imei
