Hi folks,
Hope you can help. A friend of mine has a 6310i and bluetooth
in his new car. Having all sorts of problems getting his phone to pair
with the car.
Having read some of the postings on here, I reckon he needs a
software update. I have a data cable for this phone as, I have one
myself. Where can I get the latest software from? Can I do this or,
has it got to be returned to a dealer to be updated?
Incidentally, MY phone pairs no problem (V5.51) His phone
(V5.1)
Thanks for any replies in advance.

You need V5.50 or later for Bluetooth to work properly. This *cannot* be
done with a data cable, it needs a flash cable and software. Better to get
it done by a Nokia Service Centre, it's quick and reliable and free if the
phone is under warranty. Even if it isn't it will be cheaper than a new
phone if you mess it up doing it yourself ;-)

1. How do I determine what the firmware version is on my 6310i?
2. What is the address of a Nokia Service Center that would accept an
out-of-warranty phone for a firmware upgrade? Would I have to contact them
before I send the phone?
3. What will the charge be for the upgrade?
Sorry if anything of this is "old hat."

Ivor,
Thanks for the reply, this is what I suspected. You seem to hint
in your reply that there are "other" ways to update this phone. Any
comments...
Thanks again.

Since you don't say where you are no one can tell you. If you're in
the UK, the European continent, North America, South America,
Australia, New Zealand the answer will be different. Until you tell
where you want service it's anyone's guess!
>3. What will the charge be for the upgrade?
If it's out of warranty it may be whatever their hourly rate is or it
may be gratis. The service centre can tell you.

There are a few other ways ranging from cheap and unreliable, to expensive
professional equipment.
You can pick up a cheap "China" flasher for about £30, but stand a very good
chance of rendering the phone U/S, and shafting BlueTooth etc unless you use
patched firmware files. Alternatively, you could use Griffin, Prodigy, USF,
Twister etc. which will all upgrade DCT4 handsets with very few problems -
but, these will each set you back somewhere in the region of £200+.

As to # 2 :
I am in Lincoln, Nebraska; sorry, I thought I had mentioned that. Thanks for
the answers -- maybe someone has done this upgrade out of warranty and has
an idea of the cost?

Thanks for the info. Think i might just tell him to
get his phone updated at a shop.
However, I'm still interested in the equipment to
update the firmware of these phones as, I work as a service technician
for a leading German car manufacturer. We experience lots of problems
with this type of phone, getting bluetooth to work properly.
Anyone who has experience of updating these phones
with the cheaper equipment, I would be very interested.
Thanks in advance

Best advice I can give of the cheap flashers, is steer clear of them. They
might appear a bargain at the price, but bear in mind that there will be no
support, and they are unreliable in the extreme. If you're serious about
your equipment, my advice would be to go for either Griffin (well
established and supported, but getting long in the tooth now, and I wonder
how much longer it will be supported), or Twister which is brand new on the
market, and a superb piece of kit (plus, it's the only solution I know of
that handles Card phones properly as well).

As a minimum, a Dejan dongle and a copy of WinDDP or WinDLS. You can flash
the 3310 with a cheap flasher cable and Rolis (or similar), but it's well
worth spending a bit more to get half decent kit.

It might be good to note that updating the phone this way may get it broken,
if something goes wrong. Nokia doesn't still support user-made updates.
I've heard that they're working on something called FOTA (Firmware Over The
Air) that isn't expected to be available to customers till year 2007.

the software will cost more than the value of the phone

To be honest, it's nigh on impossible to kill a DCT3 Nokia by flashing it -
even with the wrong firmware.

OTA flashing? I'll believe it when I see it. Nokia seem to be making it
harder and harder for people to flash their own phones, SE have only got 2
handsets that can be flashed by the end user - which requires the phone to
be physically connected to a computer. I can't see how OTA flashing would
work to be brutally honest.

My Nokia source let me understood that this would be still be R&D stuff, but
I don't see how it should so dificult, since some manufacturers already seem
to be doing FOTA:
http://www.google.com/search?q=Firmware+Over+The+Air
And for example Nokia's digital TV STBs (set-top-boxes) are already being
updated OTA. There are many other DVB-T STBs supporting this too.
