Actually I suspect you didn't update, but you went to a SprintPCS store and had
an update applied.

It's GREAT that it now seems to be working OK. It's unacceptable that your
phone had this known issue and SprintPCS didn't notify you first. They know who
owns Sanyo 5300's. It's called being proactive and customer friendly.

But that's a 'fine line' to walk... with ANY software..
You didn't 'quote' what he also said...that is was fairly new....
I would not want Sprint (or any carrier) rolling code straight from the
programmer to the 'field'..
The controlled rollout that Sprint uses is fine for me...

I would think as this level 'ages' then Sprint will be more and more
proactive is 'pushing' it....

Re: Sanyo 5300: Digital Roam problem now fixed

I'm not suggesting mandatory push of firmware, I'm advocating notice to
customers when new
firmware fixes known bugs is available:

ie.

Dear Customer:

** It has come to our attention that in certain fringe areas, the Sanyo 5300
may incorrectly try to roam. If your phone does this we have a firmware fix.
Bring your phone to one of our company stores (the closest one to your billing
address is xxxxx).,
** For your trouble we will give you 100 extra minutes this month.

I have to agree with this. The Samsung A500 used to have some serious
software flaws that would result in the phone fatally losing
connection to the network and having to be power cycled before you
could get service back. It took Samsung and Sprint over 6 months to
release a fix. They never made any effort to contact us A500 owners to
let us know. As a result many people today still don't know there's a
fix and have returned their phones thinking they were defective. Had
Sprint sent out a notice I'm sure they would have solved a lot of
these A500 owners problems. I was in Best Buy looking at some phones
last week when a guy came in thinking he had a defective phone and
complained of the call hanging issue. The rep at best Buy didn't know
what to tell him. Luckily I overheard the conversation and told him to
take it in for the WD29 update. I showed him how to check the version
and sure enough he had VI16.

Here's the problems with that approach from my perspective(and I used to
subscribe to your perspective!)

1) If they 'publish' to all users. they create a needless 'flood' to the
stores.

2) It may open another 'can of worms' for other users.....

3) Many users while they have the problem, may have more frustration knowing
that there is a fix and its xx miles away!

It's not just Sanyo (and/or Sprint) that has gone down this path

Microsoft - You hear about the Security fixes, and major fixes, there are
most likely 10 other fixes for each fix publicized. Probably 90% of the
'consumers' don't even know about them.

Car manufactures - There are 100's and 100's of service bulletins issued.
Minor things and even major things like a reprogramming the onboard 'chip'
for the engine controls to correct known problems. However, if you don't
ask, you don't get it

Linksys is big on this too!. You have a problem..They say... Oh , update the
software...

The current philosophy across company/product lines appears to be "If it
ain't broke, don't fix it..If it didn't break for you , then it's not broke"

So the alternative is to keep it a secret that there's a fix and not tell
anybody (like SprintPCS does now).

OK - How about picking times when stores are not busy. Tuesday at 10AM,
Thursday at 2 PM only, or some such for firmware patches?

When phones have known issues, it is unacceptable to keep it a secret from the
customers.

Pretty big words from a troll- back up the accusation.

I partly agree with you on this but I also think it depends on how
serious the software bugs are. In the case of the A500 it was a major
glitch in the firmware that seriously affected the phone's
performance. It would have been nice if Sprint could have contacted
the owners and informed them of the fix.

From what I've read about the A500 issue and using my above analogies...
that should have been a RECALL, not a service bulletin! But each situation
is different
