ok...i've been a member of sprint since june and i can't wait for my
contract to end. maybe its the phone itself (a samsung SCH-A460), but
i get practically ZERO service just about ANYWHERE. i mean, i can
count one too many times (including last week when i needed it most
while my grandmother was almost on her death bed--no joke) when my
phone simply DID NOT WORK in broad daylight and standing on the
corner. not to mention the times that it simply refuses to ring at
times. i can't help feeling a tad screwed over here since i get the
    world's crappiest service.

hell, maybe its my phone??? please, if anyone can give me some advice
i'd really appreciate it as i'm about to throw my phone across the
    street.

Wrong phone for sure. Try a Sanyo or Nokia Big difference.

It would help us respond to your question if you'd tell us what city or
town and state you're in, so someone who has been there can say if
    they've had similar reception there.

In any case, I've had a Samsung A460 (and before that a Samsnug 3500,
2000, and 1000) and none have been as bad as you've described. I've
made thousands of minutes of calls on them since 1997. My new Samsung
A620 is much better (as are current Sanyo and Nokia phones), but the
A460 wasn't as bad as your experience.

You ought to take the phone to a Sprint PCS store (not a Radio Shack or
other reseller) and have them put the phone on their test equipment and
see if there's a problem with it. A replacement will be covered under
    the 1 year warranty.

They may at first just offer to update its software and PRL and send you
on your way. Your phone needs more than that. By the way, do
Menu-9-1-5 to see your versions. Current software is WI19, current PRL
    is 10021.

Sounds like ample grounds to get out of a contract.

Basic legal principle of "Fitness for purpose" applies.

You can not be made to pay for service you can't get.

Write to your State's Attorney General, with certfied coipy to SprintPCS
    HQ in Kansas City.

Throw good money after bad is not sound advice. If the phone is that bad
for reception SprintPCS shopuld replace it.

Yes, I have have similar experiences with that phone. I bought a Sanyo, and
I get great reception in far more remote places than I could ever reach with
    the a460.
