Re: I'm gona miss this group - porting success story
<Wow, Donna, I was just going to reply to your orginal post since I know
you as the original "Vision RV-er" , and then I saw THIS! You
mentioned that it roams on the AT&T network. Which AT&T network, the
TDMA or GSM one? In either case, I doubt it's going to be anywhere near
as fast as Vision (GSM should be faster). What you gonna do on the road
now? >
I did some more research and apparently if I get a Siemens S56 (for $79.99)
and the USB cable off ebay cheap - I will be able to connect with the laptop
afterall on AT&T! The tech rep said I set up the dial up connection #99*
and the speed is 124k or something like that! So I am going to take back my
free phone and get the Siemens! It is the GSM network I think - I do know
I was told with the Nokia 3595 I would not be capable of roaming off AT&T.
However, the data plan is pretty expensive - for example for a month 4 MB is
$12.99 8 MB is $19.99 100 MB is $99.99 (free for 2 months). DonnaB

Re: I'm gona miss this group - porting success story
You folks are very confused. EDGE stands for "Enhanced Data Rates for
GSM Evolution." The technology uses different modulation techniques
and compression codecs to enhance GPRS throughput. This is designed
specifically for GSM/GPRS networks. AT&T Wireless runs this
nationwide. Cingular runs in on certain parts of their network.
Typical data rates on AT&T's deployment are about 130K-170K using the
GC-82 PCMCIA card and about 75K-100K using the Nokia 6200 phone as a
modem. These rates are faster than what 1xRTT offers.

John,
Since you are knowledgable on this - am I correct in stating if I use the
Siemens S56 phone as a modem with the data plan on AT&T I will be using data
and not minutes? Also one rep I talked to said EDGE was not available yet
(Cincinnati Bell Wireless which uses AT&T). DonnaB

Well, the Nokia 3595 is a GSM handset.
You might be able to roam onto selected providers IF the IRDB (the list of
networks on which the phone may be used) includes non-AT&T networks. As a
blanket statement, "you can't roam off AT&T" isn't necessarily accurate -
T-Mobile and Cingular run compatible networks. If you can't roam off AT&T
with the phone, it's because the phone's settings or IRDB don't allow roaming.

<If you can't roam off AT&T

roaming> Yes, that is true, the rep cautioned getting the Nokia 3595 because
the way CB Wireless set it up it would not even get a non AT&T signal! (but
I got it anyhow). DonnaB who is thinking of switching to a Siemens S56 and
if anyone out there has ever used one would really appreciate feedback on it

Re: I'm gona miss this group - porting success story
Donna,
That is correct, you will be billed according to your data plan, not
voice minutes. You can buy x amount of MB per month and if you exceed
that you will be billed per KB. I recommend checking the rates for
the data plans on your carriers web site.
Cincinnati Bell Wireless is similar to an affiliate of AT&T Wireless.
That agreement allows Cincinnati Bell to use the AT&T branding in
their marketing as well as use the AT&T Wireless national network as a
preferred roaming partner. AT&T Wireless uses Cincinnati Bell's
network as it's preferred roaming partner in it's coverage areas.
Cincinnati Bell has commited to upgrade to EDGE by the 2nd quarter of
2004. Their current GSM network supports GPRS data rates (30K-45K).
These would be the rates you can expect from your S56. The Nokia 6200
is currently the only EDGE capable phone.
