I will be upgrading my current crummy Samsung SPH-A460 flip phone to a
new phone.
I'm looking for the current best flip-phone offered by SPCS for
reception and dual-band.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks,

Try looking at the Sanyo's ... like the 8100, 5300 (available at sources
other than SPCS) or step up to the newer models with the RL option. It all
depends on what your needs will be, whether you feel you want a camera
phone, or ready link.
SPCS use to offer a special rebate for those folks who wanted to upgrade to
a new phone, if the phone was the same phone number for 18 or more
continuous months. I don't know whether that's available still, but you
should ask CS if it is.

To add to what Bob said....
1) Use Google to search the newsgroup for the very question your asked...
There has been much discussion in the past....
Here is a 'tinyurl' to help
http://tinyurl.com/2u668
2) One caution on "available at sources other than SPCS". If you are buying
a phone that
is other than factory-sealed from Sprint, I would advise checking the ESN
with Sprint, before
the transaction is completed! This is to project you from fraudulent sales.
3) Also some stores may still have 5300's available, if that is what you
want.
4) How old is your "crummy Samsung SPH-A460"? I just had a swap-out done on
the A460 on
my account and it was a world of difference from the other one!!

This A460 was a free remanufactured replacement for my A400 that I
drown. My comparison is with the A400.
I find that the A460 does not hold on to a signal in my house like the
A400 did. I also have found that I have to talk a great deal louder
for the other person to hear me.
I did check that the phone was on the latest available software and
PRL.
Thanks for you help,
Jeff G.

Sanyos tend to hold a better signal in low / weak coverage areas than
Samsungs do, Sanyo is also more "honest" when it comes to posting
battery life, along with being much more durable than Samsungs.
Now, depending on what you're looking for,
No Camera - The RM2500 / Sanyo 5400. Great flip phone, no camera, it
does have ReadyLink, but you do not have to use it.
Camera - Sanyo 8100 - great phone, and less expensive than the other
Sanyo camera phones. No flash. No Readylink.
Sanyo 5300 - Sprint's first camera phone - flash and zoom, but can be
a little slow processing pictures & displaying them, it also may be
hard to get since it's currently being discontinued.
Sanyo 5500 / VM4500 - Camera / Camcorder phone with Readylink. Top of
the line model w/ all the bells and whistles. Only complaint so far
is battery life - which is expected since everyone is playing with the
camera / camcorder feature on that and don't realize that uses a lot
more of the battery than it does while talking on the phone.
The Samsungs are OK, but I'm still apprehensive condisering Samsung's
few past lineups. Great at first, then quickly wear down and break
down. Reception isn't very good, camera quality is a little lower
than the Sanyo's. Battery life is stretched a bit, too. A600 isn't
giing you much more in what the average user will use except a swivel
flip and a non-stationary camera.
The A660 does seem to be doing well, but I"m still holding back
considering the A460, N400, N240, and probabaly soon to be A620
fiasco.
The Toshiba / Audiovox VM4050 is too new to really base any opinions
on the reception and durability aspect, but I've seen a couple reviews
on it, some good, some bad.
Honestly, they don't make them like they used to, the Samsung 8500 was
an incredible phone, the Sanyo 5150 was also up there. The A400 was
also good compared to these phones, but considered very good compared
to today's Samsung lineup.

Can you tell us more about this "A620 fiasco"?

Same thing that I've seen with other recent Samsung models. They seem
good in the beginning, but then we see a lot come in for warranty
issues, mainly dropped calls and battery life.
It seems that while Samsung goes all out and puts out a great first
few batches, later batches seem to lack the consistency.
There is no "fiasco" yet with the A620 / VGA1000, but concidering
Samsung's recent track record, I can speculate that there may be
issues with them in the future.

Re: Current Best SPCS Flip Phone?
My husband and I got the new RL2500 last Thursday. We love them. So far,
we have had no reception problems whatsoever. The sound quality is very
nice. Although for comparison's sake, I was upgrading from a 2 1/2 year old
Kyocera :-)
You might want to check out phonescoop.com. They have lots of good phone
info and a nifty phone finder feature.

Re: Current Best SPCS Flip Phone?
I know that I will get a lot of greef by posting this comment, but the
best phone out on the market is the VM 4500. I have had the sanyo 8100
and RL2500 but neither one can stand up like my 4500 has. I get better
signal strenght with my 4500 than either of the other phones. I live in a
low service area and I always get service when the other phones kicked me
to roam. The camera is a nice feature on the phone, but I hardly use it.
I switched from the 2500 to the 4500 mostly because of the battery. The
2500 had the worst battery on it that I had ever seen. As everyone knows
the manufacturer nor sprint will cover the battery. I tried. Until Sanyo
comes out with another RL phone go with the 4500.
