So now that I've already whined about this, maybe there is a some method for
uploading/downloading my own formatted music (that's legally purchased with
my own American $s folks, so let's not get into that discussion please!) to
my phone?
Is it simply a matter of making them available from a web server and issuing
the download with my WAP device?
sorry if this is obvious to others, I'm still getting used to this non
rotary telephone thing!

If you have a Treo 600 Phone you can load wav and mp3 files directly to
your phone's SD Storage Card from your computer.
You are able to play these mp3s using the Pocket Tunes program
If you use the Lightwav program you can assign these mp3s and or wav
files to alarm sounds, datebook alarms, SMS and email alarms.
And have a different mp3 ringer for each person in your contact list
