My wife lost here Sprint Vision Sanyo 4900 phone. Sprint and Sprint
stores want a fortune to replace it. We're off contract but less
than the 16 months required by Sprint to get the "new" price if
we get back on a contract.

Any good places to get refurbished phones?

    Thank you

    Frank

None of the stores has the Hitachi P300 that my wife wanted - it's discontinued
and even the one store we went to that has a floor model says it has to be sent
back rather than sold. We went to eBay and ended up with a very pleasant
transaction with a gentleman who actually, if I recall, was not too far away
from us. The phone isn't brand new but it came to us in very good condition.

We've been lucky - she's bought a lot of stuff there lately and has had much
good luck with the people she's bought from. We did have to bid and lose on
two other P300 auctions before we finally got a phone, but I'm happy with the
buyer we did eventually buy from. He had a Sprint account but opted to use
Nextel through his employer instead, as he was at the end of his contract.

The standard "buyer beware" warning applies, since this *is* eBay, the largest
auction site on the Net, and there are plenty of bad apples as well as people
who are 100% honest. Check out their feedback, and don't hesitate to ask
    questions.

And ask for the ESN. Our buyer didn't want to give the ESN because he'd
been told by Sprint that people could do bad things with it, but what I
was told by Sprint is that even if we *have* the ESN we can't call and
activate a phone if it's still active on someone else's account. They'd
have to deactivate it; generally this is done either by replacing the phone
with another phone or terminating service with Sprint. So, do ask for the ESN,
and do call Customer Service to check it - if the phone has been reported
lost or stolen, or the seller hasn't paid their bill, you will not be able
to activate the phone even if you bought it fair and square.

Our buyer, by the way, is dcobrien. Quite the gentleman, and had no problem
answering all of my questions. So I wanted to add a little positive
feedback here, in addition to what we've already given him on eBay...
just in case y'all ever happen to want to bid on something he's selling.
(I can, however, say with certainty that I don't think he'll be auctioning
    off any more Sprint phones.)

Some Sprint stores, and Ebay are common sources.

more good advice... (I've never used the howardforums or sprintusers
forsale boards so I didn't even think to list them)

Y'know, both you and Phillipe mentioned that, which makes me wonder...
The most that I know of that any carrier will do with a refurb is give it out
as a warranty replacement. I've not known *any* carrier to actually *sell*
them... What would you have to do to buy one from Sprint??

Sprint used to sell refurbished phones in the past, but the stores
themselves haven't done so (as far as I know) in the past year and a
half with the only exception being a program they had for a short
while last year, selling refurbished phones for roughly $20-$40 to be
used for customers in situations like this one.

There may be a store or two (although it's doubtful) that still has
these in stock, but the last time they were shipped out was early last
    summer.

EBay may be a good bet, but what you're getting may be a crap shoot.
I'm not sure if Radio Shack still sells refurbished phones or not at
    times.

Re: Replacement for lost Sprint Phone?

Wednesday morning about a dozen different Sanyo 4900's were for sale on
eBay, only one claimed to be new in its box.

Most were bid to the ~$80 level.

Just go to Ebay (http://www.ebay.com) search on "Sanyo 4900", and click "Price"
column so it sorts as most expensive first, which will cause the
accesories to fall to the bottom of the list and phones to rise to the
    top.

They have. We got a refurb 2255 from them. Keep in mind, however, that a
lot of Rat Shacks are independent dealers that may or may not offer what
    the company stores offer.

Radio shack does a decent business in refurbished SPCS phones for some odd
    reason.

They get 'em straight from Sprint, or internatl returns that are
    refurbished, so I've been told.

I had a strong suspicion that Radio Shack has their own processes of
    refurbishing Sprint's phones.

We have an internal tracking system, it tracks the movements of each
phone (tracked by ESN) though Sprint's inventory system, from the
minute they're received in the warehouse, to the minute they're sold
(either though the web, telesales, to a 3rd party, at a store etc..).
I can track any phone's movement.

When I see these refurbs come in that people say they bought
refurbished though Radio Shack, I can track the phone up until when
the first person had it bought it, after that, nothing. SO it gets
refurbished without going though Sprint's inventory system.
