I am going through a bit of a nightmare trying to get my Sanyo 8100
replaced. Sprint uses a third party for it's damaged or lost replace
phone service. I have been paying into this for 5 years! Well my 8100
crapped out (After owning it for a little over a year). Call them up,
paid my $35. And a replacement comparable phone was on its way. Arrive
a Samsung with a rotating screen and VGA cam. I Said WTF! I have over
$200.00 in accessories and I HATE SAMSUNG! Called them up to *****,
they said they would send me another phone, I told them I want another
Sanyo new used better worse, I did not care, I just want to be able to
my datacable and I love my Sanyo! 4 days later arives another Samsung
VGA1000 ugly ass phone. Called them up and they said feature for
feature these phones where Identical. I said BS! I purchased a Chevy
sent it in for warranty repair and you have given me a Ford back!
WTF?? 25 minutes later, After them claiming they can not tell what
phones are being sent to the client only that they are comparable, THe
Superviosor finally agrees to send me a Sanyo VM4500. I then said, Why
the hell did you tell me that you can't send me a specific phone, she
said that it is policy. I said your policy sucks and whomever makes
these decesion has fogotten about customer service, she has wasted 1
hour of my time bickering and I hope she was happy... She said have a
nice day. Well we shall see if I indeed get my phone.

I don't think any carrier will guarantee that they will replace your phone
with the same brand. I do feel your pain, though. People tend to be pretty
brand-loyal after their first or second phone - I know I am with mine.

They should at least attempt to replace it with the same phone since people
usually buy extra batteries, cable chargers and other add-ons. Thos extras
could amount to a lot of money and with another phone could be expensive to
replace with ones that will work with that new one. Since I have the 8100
also I have about $100 worth of add-ons including data cable, extra battery,
    holster and desktop charger.

I agree. I was just saying that no one will guarantee that they will be
    able to do it.

Yes I understand but their argument is false. They said feature for
feature the phones are identical. That is not true. External feature
are not covered only phone functionality. Anyway, I even requested a
refund of the $35 and I would go buy my own phone and cancel their
insurance. No way Jose! The $35.00 is non-refundable and when you opt
for the insurance it is for a one year term. BASTARDS!

BTW - They already disconnected service on my old phone because the
new one will be here on Tuesday! WHY? WHY? Why can't they wait until
you get your phone to shutdown service on the old one? I could have
kept using my old one... The display was the only problem! No No No -
as soon as we ship the phone the service changes! OMG! These NAZI

That insurance, as provided, is one of the most non-cost-effective things
I've come across in quite awhile.

    Dumped it long ago.

For no phone call, slightly more money, and on the same day, I can go to the
SprintPCS store and obtain a new phone.

Somebody (Sprint or Insurance Provider (or both)) are making money hand-over-
    fist on this scam.

Define "slightly more money." How much would they charge for a
refurbished Sanyo 8100? Aren't you limited to whatever refurbished
phones that particular store has in stock?

On a $100 Phone absolutely. If you have a $500 phone and one is prone to
    dropping phones, maybe not.

I wasn't limiting to refurbished phones and, admittedly, I am assuming not
    top-of-the-line phones.

In the case of $35, I define "slightly more money" as up to three times that
amount; especially if you consider the cost of wasted time on phone call(s)
and cost(s) associated with potentially being out of touch while your
replacement arrives... Not to mention potential problems such as those that
    began this thread.

I'll give you that... (and maybe I should include a clip-on leash ??).

I *might* consider insurance on a phone in that cost range. However, I
suspect (without researching) that there are much better plans (third party)
by which to recoup the cost of such a phone. Especially a phone used for
    business purposes.

I buy store coverage plans on cell phones. There are people out there
that will tell you those coverage plans are a scam - not true. They
aren't always a value, but I find that I get great service out of them
for mid-high end cell phones. Circuit City has replaced my Treo 300
three times, in store. When the third failed, I swapped for an A500.
After a few months it wouldn't run on the charger with a dead battery.
They sent a new one, and it locked up when I tried to look up a number
in my call history while I was in an active call. The phone would just
restart over and over again. They didn't have any more A500s, so they
sent me an A620. That's six replacement phones. I think I paid $40 for
the coverage, and I think I renewed with the instore replacements, so
it's good to summer 2005. No deductable. I just wish Circuit City still
sold Sprint - I'd get my next phone from them. These days, with Circuit
out of the Sprint business, they contract with lockline. You call
Circuit, talk to a Circuit City operator, who resolves everything by
Circuit City warranty standards and then has Lockline ship the product
via Fedex. Never had a refurb either.
    -mike
Side story - while I was waiting for my last replacement to ship, I ran
into a guy buying a Nokia 3588i to replace his N400 that had been
"freezing up" on him. I offered him $20 for the phone. Lightly scuffed,
missing antenna plug, 0k data life timer, 35000 on voice. Upgraded
firmware and Prl, and gave it a good cleaning. Activated it that day,
used it for a week and a half and then activated my new A620. A couple
days later, I'm talking to a guy who's griping about his N400's bad
power connector. I mention that I had one, but had just switched to the
A620. He offered me $150 for it! (I took the deal.)
