Frustrated with the 'Vision thing'

Hello all,

I am interested in upgrading from my Samsung SPH A400...specifically
I'm looking for a flip with caller ID display on the outside (like the
A460). I look on Sprint's web site and all of the new phones except
for one are 'Vision' phones which I could not care less about. Oddly
enough, I use my phone primarily for making phone calls and my digital
camera for taking digital photos and have no desire to combine the
two. It really galls me that Sprint insists on bulking up all of
their phones (both in size and weight) with cameras and color screens
when all I want to do with a phone is make mobile phone calls with
maximum efficiency and convenience. I know I can get on eBay and
dredge up a used Samsung A460 which will do what I want but it
frustrates me when I go to Cingular's site and see smaller, lighter
weight phones available there like the Samsung S307. Whether or not
the S307 in particular will work on Sprint's network is irrelevant to
me...what frustrates me is that Sprint is perfectly capable of
carrying smaller lighter phones that don't take pictures (except for
one token Nokia non-flip) but refuse to do so. Does Sprint's
obsession with the 'Vision thing' frustrate anyone else? And just out
of curiosity, are there other discontinued phones out there that would
be a good alternative to the Samsung A460 that are similar or smaller
in size/weight, flip, and have external caller ID display? Thanks for
tolerating my rant...

Bruce

Agree! I keep waiting and watching for a non-flip, non camera phone,
preferably by Sanyo.

The Sanyo 5400 (RL2500) is a quality phone with no camera. Its' size is
somewhat larger than it could be as it is also a ReadyLink phone, but
that large speaker makes for it being an excellent speaker phone.

Bruce, it's the nature of the beast with technology. Do you see any new cars
that don't come with a radio, air conditioning, or a heater? Those aren't
needed for driving, nor are they required by law, but people like to use
them.

Vision is the way of the future for wireless phones, and it's going to be
there in all their phones, save for one Nokia model currently being sold. As
to your decision on phones, it sounds like you want a flip phone. Maybe the
Sanyo 8100, even though it comes with a camera might work for you. The
Samsung VI660 comes without a camera.

We just upgraded to a pair of Samsung VI660's. Supposedly we get $170 rebate
on each since our old phones were well over 2 yrs old. Mine was a Samsun
3500.

No outside display, no camera, but very small.

You know you don't have to activate Vision on your account, though.

I just replaced my ?five? year old Qualcomm "brick" with the Nokia 3588i, which
I am most pleased with. I, too, was not interested in having a phone with a
camera or one that was real small. (My wife has the Samsung N400, I have trouble
handling it.) I also was not interested in the Vision thing, either. I also
enjoy the text messaging features of the Nokia, use it to zap messages back and
forth to my kids' Virgin Mobile phones.

There are plenty of the old stuff available on ebay for virtually
nothing, but like phillipe said, the 5400 is a great phone, and just
in case you ever want r/l or vision all you have to do is sign up for
it. Personally I use it daily, but don;t have a use for r/l yet--but
I won;t have to buy antoher phone should I need it.

Re: Frustrated with the 'Vision thing'

I've heard many people on the inside also state to corp / QA
departments that we need more 'basic' phones, like the tiny Nokias
that Cingular has etc.

I do know that the Nokia 2585 & 3588 were 'trial' phones to see how
Nokias do once again, and they're doing very well, I've heard nothing
offical on this, but I would guess we may see more from them in the
future.

Motorola has a phone coming back out for Sprint, but I'm not holding
my breath.

Samsung has the VI660 which is close to basic, but doesn't match the
features of the A500.

Nokia 3588 is a basic phone, and all the others can be if you don't
use the extra feautres (but also, I'll agree, why pay for them?).

Re: Frustrated with the 'Vision thing'

Wait a few weeks for the V60V. I heard it might only be sold via the
busioness offices so wait till after 4/1/04 and call a Sprint business
sales office. I did last week. They said it was on their web site
but not out just yet. I was told to check back after 4/1/04

Good luck
