Compared F&CA/Verizon

The other day I was traveling north of Dallas on the backroads up to north
of Amarillo. I had F&CA while my friend had a Verizon National plan. We both
have Startacs. We both had signal about 99% of the time. The 1% is when I
think it was searching for a new system to lock unto.

Observations:

We both had signal but it seemed that MY FRIEND had a digital signal all of
the time time while Sprint would switch over to "Analog Roam" most of the
time. The phone would heat up using analog roam and of course it really
sucks the juice from the battery but it wasn't really a big deal. A friend I
called said it was "staticky" at times but understandable. I guess when a
digital signal changes that the sound garbles instead. It seems at times
that the two signal strengths on the phones matched bar for bar and would
incease/decrease at the same time leading me to think they were using the
same towers. This was my first time using the F&CA and overall I was pleased
with it.

Like I said, I was really out in the boonies. Without the F&CA I estimate I
would have had signal about 40 to 50% of the time.

Hopefully Sprint and Verizon will merge at some point in the future and we
will all have the best system and the best coverage in the country.

Re: Compared F&CA/Verizon

A large amount of SPCS's digital roaming is Verizon.

Re: Compared F&CA/Verizon

My recollections are that Sprint's Startac was not trimode (didn't
receive 800mhz digital CDMA). The silver version--the Timeport--was
trimode, but not the Startac. If my memory is correct, this could be
one reason your phone went into analog so much. You had a whole
spectrum of digital unavailable to you.

Also, without the F&CA you would have had the same signal, but you
would have paid much more dearly to use it.

Re: Compared F&CA/Verizon

I was under the impression that it is a dual band, tri-mode phone.

Re: Compared F&CA/Verizon

Is it a ST 7867W?

If so, it will only do 1900Mhz CDMA and 800Mhz AMPS.
I have the same model.

Re: Compared F&CA/Verizon

It is a ST 7867W...

So I guess the dual band means 1900Mhz CDMA and 800Mhz AMPS. What does the
tri-mode mean?

"Tri-Mode" will also accept 800MHz CDMA (generally, but all 'tri-mode
Sprint phones will pick up those 3 bands).

But, technicaly "dual band" just means it can handle two bands, and
"tri-mode" just means that it can pick up 3 network types.

Technically, a 1900MHz CDMA, 800MHz CDMA, 1900MHz GSM phone would be
dual band, tri mode, too.
