A500 replacement....

I love my A500 (size, sound quality, case is resistant to scratching, NO
camera), but I've just recently moved to a fringe area of coverage in Las
Vegas, and I'm dropping calls all the time. Since I use this phone for
business, dropping calls is not an option.

I've been looking at the current offerings from SPCS, but I don't need a
camera, PDA, etc...just a phone. I've read here that the Sanyo's get better
reception; any truth to that?

If anyone can suggest a good replacement it'd be much appreciated!

Well, start by making sure you've had the latest firmware update applied
to the handset. See if you can get the Free and Clear America option.
It's at its best if you get it for $5. At $10, it's a weaker plan.

For size, you want the VI660. It's pretty much the exact same size, and
most of your accessories will fit it, including many phone cases and
holsters.

If you can handle a phone that is a little larger, I'd reccommend a
RL7300. It has MO-SMS for easier text messaging and a nice speaker phone
feature. If resistance to scratching is a big deal, that's your phone.
If you need a little smaller, the RL2500 can be had, but being an older
phone, you'll miss the better text messaging system.

Many people, myself included, feel the Sanyo earpiece sound is not on
par with Samsung, but I've acclimated pretty quickly.

The A500 is known problem phone. Many times a good customer will be
given a gratis replacement by a SprintPCS store **IF THEY ASK** and are
complaining about one of the many known defects of a A500.
I have a friend who was just given a VGA1000 to replace his A500.

What are the known defects?

Because it is considered an old model, I'm not gonna hold
my breath, waiting for an update.

Fortunately, it's more of a "behind the scenes" bug, rather
than an "in your face" one.

Thats a complete lie, but its typical of a SprintPCS apologist
to resort to insults when they're caught in a lie. That is hardly the
only post from you referencing A500 defects, and you know that.

Thanks Mike. According to phonescoop.com, the Sanyo's don't have a "data"
mode, allowing the phone to be used as a modem. This doesn't seem right.
Can you confirm? Also, are Sanyo's generally considered better in fringe
areas? Thanks again for your help.

I agree that it doesn't seem right. I can tell you that I've used Sanyo
3G phones in the past in this manner. I have an 8200, but I don't have
the cable yet. Bought one a while back, gave it to a friend that owns a
Sanyo a week before I found about this phone. Isn't that always the way?

LOL! Yup! Same exact thing happened to me. Upon further research, I'm
considering the Samsung VGA1000....seems to have better reception over other
Samsungs, and the form factor is in keeping with the A500. Thanks again for
