Frank: Thanks for the tip about the software update. The version in
my VGA1000 is indeed WG09. Actually, I'm not even sure I want the
ext. LCD backlight to come on every time I accidently bump the phone,
but might try to have the firmware updated the next time I'm by a
Sprint store anyway. BTW, are there any other changes to the lastest
code that you know about? Thanks

The only thing I know about bugs experienced by users with WG09 is from
reading a thread in this newsgroup from Dec 18-19, 2003. Use Google
Groups Advanced search to look for WG09 in alt.cellular.sprintpcs on Dec
18-19, 2003 and you'll find symptoms from users like this:

    Posted by Matt
The biggest problem with the phone is it experiences occasional
"bugs". Often times the phone will exit out of whatever the current
application is and reset. Several times, I have been in the middle of
making a phonebook entry, when the phone decides to exit out of the
phonebook programming menu and revert back to the default
screensaver/display. I then have to go back and re-enter all the
    information that was just lost.

One annoyance I have experienced with this phone, is a high-pitched
whine, squeal, buzz, ringing, whatever you want to call it can be heard
through the earpiece every once in a while while carrying on a
    conversation on this phone.

    And from O/Siris
There is a software update in final testing. WJ09. It was actually, at
one time, scheduled to be out already. If you have the number to a
nearby service center, you might want to check back with them now and
again to find out when they have it.
It's listed as a resolution for a bug where some phones suddenly
announce that voice calls cannot be made while in an active data
session, but there's no apparent data session in progress. I don't know
what, if anything, else it'll be aimed to resolve.
