Ok, so I just got a new Toshiba VM-4050 phone and like it a lot. Now I want
to buy a data cable and, if necessary, sync software for it so I can connect
it to a computer--for *occasional* use, of course. But I'm confused by all
the options available:
1 - Which cables are recommended, or are they all basically the same? Some
appear to be just cables, while others have some sort of black box in the
middle whose purpose I'm not sure of. Does which cable you get depend on
what you'll use it for (e.g. phone modem, downloading images/ringtones,
syncing contacts, etc.)?
2 - I understand that to use my phone as a modem, all I need is a cable and
a USB driver for my PC. But what kind of software do I need to do other
things, and which software is recommended for each of them:
-Downloading/uploading images, videos, ringtones, voice memos, etc.
-Ditto for apps & games
-Syncing phone's address book with Outlook and/or backing it up on PC
-Ditto for calendar scheduler
Are there any freeware apps to do any of the above, or can any of these be
accomplished with XP's native apps and capabilities?
Thanks,
Kovie

Last time I looked there were no cables yet available for the VM-4050.
Your choices may be limited.

I've found them at several sites. They're just now starting to appear. Here
are a few:

Re: Data cable/Sync software questions
Sorry to re-ask, but I still haven't seen any responses to my original
questions. So, what do most people who sync their phones with their PCs use,
DataPilot or FutureDial? What are the pros and cons of each? And are there
differences among cable types, or are they all basically the same?

Kovie, I use BitPim right now for my 5300. BitPim is still in development,
with betas available for certain models. I've been thinking of going with
DataPilot though, considering the correspondence I've had with them.
It offers more features, and I can install it on two laptops, mine and my
daughter's, without any worries about licensing problems. They offer 6 month
free updates. We are going to upgrade my daughter's phone soon, and the CD
they send is for all the models they support, not just the model you want to
sync with. So, if she gets a new model not yet supported, it will be within
the next few months.
By the by, they also said they will be releasing a new version within 1 to 2
months, which will probably (not 100% sure) include support for the 8200 and
the 6225.

Re: Data cable/Sync software questions
I sent DataPilot an email asking about support for my Toshiba VM-4050, and
received a response this morning indicating that it's not yet supported and
that there is no timeline for when it will be supported. So, while their
quick and direct response impressed me, unfortunately I can't use their
product yet. Having done a bit of research into both apps, based on features
alone DataPilot seems like the better of the two, as it includes all
connectivety features in its $30 package, e.g. backing up and syncing
contacts and calendar, ringer and picture downloads, etc., whereas with
FutureDial you have to buy a separate app to do all of these, for a total of
$60. I guess I'll have to wait.
