I'm a long-time Sprint PCS customer, and for the past 3-4 years I've
    happily used a Motorola V8162
    (http://cellphones.about.com/library/...rola_v8162.htm) which I
particularly liked for its light weight (3 ounces) and small size. I
keep the phone on my belt, so size and weight are my top priorities.

My 8162 is coming to its end -- screen flickers, earpiece is
unreliable (though headset is thankfully still just fine), etc. So
it's time to get a new phone.

Recommendations for best small Sprint PCS phones? A model sold by
Sprint would be best, so I can take advantage of their rebates /
subsidies. But the models on their web site and in their retail
locations all seem pretty big -- the smallest in the store being the
Samsung V1660, which is perhaps a quarter inch wider than what I have
and also half an ounce heavier. Obviously I'm getting a lot more
phone than my old 8162 -- color screen, better battery life, etc. --
but it's still quite odd to think that the smallest and lightest phone
of today is bigger and heavier than the smallest of 4 years ago!

Well, there's a reason why they are bigger, as you have already outlined,
larger color displays, bigger batteries etc. As for the 660, lots of folks
here have it and have praised it. Same goes for the Sanyo models.

As for any smaller models, until they can create a smaller more efficient
battery with as much or more juice, I'm afraid you are SOL.
