I've been trying to find a low (<400ms) latency WAN service for years.
I have GPRS now and it's certainly not the answer. Even EDGE looks
like it might not be satisfying.

I've seen lots of reports of CDMA2000 1x providing latency of 400 to
    600 ms.

As I was researching this again today, I saw a claim of CDMA2000 1x
    providing latency of 100-300ms.

Has something been tweaked? Am I likely to get such latencies using
    an AirCard 550 with SprintPCS?

(I'm a longtime multi-phone SprintPCS customer. If this works I'll be
happy to stay with them but I'm also watching for Verizon to expand
    EV-DO coverage.)

    Thank you.

    I have seen 1X with latency of 200 - 400ms.
I get about 250ms with my Air Card.

EV-DO Gives me between 100 - 200ms this is with the aircard 580.

I called the nearest Sprint Store. We don't have EV-DO here and the
only PCMCIA card they have is the Merlin C201.
I'm seeing latency reports of 250-700ms for it.

    http://www.tummy.com/articles/laptops/merlin-c201/
Is it likely that this card yields greater latency than an AirCard?

I'm considering trying it today if I have time. I'm sure it's not
trivial to try it and return it so I'd appreciate knowing if it's
    unlikely to work for me.

    Thank you.

O.k., I went ahead and got a Merlin C201 today. A friend activated
it on his MS machine and now I'm using it under Linux.

I'm seeing pings in the 300-400ms range.
20 packets transmitted, 20 received, 0% packet loss, time 19008ms
    rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 329.943/344.626/376.059/11.837 ms

30 packets transmitted, 30 received, 0% packet loss, time 29025ms
    rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 330.030/377.348/535.002/62.550 ms

102 packets transmitted, 102 received, 0% packet loss, time 101080ms
    rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 315.941/361.483/1070.908/90.193 ms, pipe 2

This isn't ideal for my application but it's vastly less frustrating
    than my experience with GPRS.

That might be about right, it varies alot from network to network.
EV-DO,when out with Sprint will have low latency 100 - 200ms. And they will
have the Aircard 580. What app are you running? Citrix?
