I received a letter from Sprint telling me that I'm such a good, long time customer that I would receive a 5% discount off my service if I signed up for two years again.
My contract ended last November and this is the first offer for renewal.
The letter stated the offer was good until 04/10/05, so I was kind of surprised when I called this afternoon and the recording said the time for the offer was over.
Maybe, I should tell them that we turned the clocks ahead one hour yesterday, not one week...........
Is this typical?

This would not be what I would call a retention offer but a fishing ploy
for non-contract sprintpcs users. I have gotten a few of them myself but
when I think of 7pm nights & weekends, possibility of a new phone, maybe
100 minute bucket add-on,etc... 5% off seems like a pretty weak deal. I
can see where it might help with someone who has a $100+ bill but since
that does not apply to me it is not worth it for me.

I don't know whether it's typical on their mailings. I received a letter
like that, and spoke to a retention rep. My bill was averaging $130 / mo.
(with T & S) on 3 phones, 2000 min., 7:00 PM N & W, PCS2PCS, Vision on two
phones & F&CA. I wasn't using half of my minutes.
I was able to cut a nice little deal for 1200 minutes, 8:00 PM N & W, Vision
on 2 phones, PCS2PCS & F&CA, for $85 / mo. and with a 5% discount on that.
Total monthly expense is about $93 with Tax & Surcharges.
You need to find out what the competition is offering, prior to speaking
with SPCS. Tell them that you don't want to change, but can they match the
deals the other providers are offering.

I read that they will give you a 5% good customer discount..so I
called in and I got that very easily. My daughter got a 23% discount
because she works for a certain company. They give discounts for
being in a credit union. I think I was one of the few Sprint
customers paying full price for my service

Re: Retention incentive - supposedly!!
Call customer service and tell them you want to cancel your service, then starts good retentiom offering. Tell them you have called before 4/10/2005 and was told you that offer has been expired.

Re: Retention incentive - supposedly!!
I just had occasion to call customer service.
I am on an "expired" 2 phone 2000 AT plan with Vision and PCS2PCS for
$85.00 p.m.
I mentioned in passing that the "new" plans are not as good as the one
I have had for the last 2 years. I was offerd a 5% discount to renew. I
declined this as too little. I was also told that it is quite usual in
"telecommunications" for prices to go UP rather than down.
Hmmm SprintPCS must be on a different planet from me. Time for me to
look around at the competition and make a decision.

Re: Retention incentive - supposedly!!
These are all interesting responses.
I sent the note just to see what the reaction might be and it is fascinating.
In all likelihood I probably do not plan to do anything.
Right now I do not have a bad deal and I don't use the phone that much.
I am on a 29.99 for 300 min with free wkd/nites and the PCS2PCS is refunded each month.
I did find out and the local store put it thru last week that I can get a 15% discount where I work part time.
So, I guess that will be about 25+ a month.
I was going to tell them that I'd sign up for another two years if they gave me a phone.
But with all the courteous customer service I'll just use the phone at this rate until it dies.
I'm a pleased customer of the service not the customer service!!!!

I doubt you'll get anywhere near as good a deal from Retention. Wife is on that
plan (although she pays the $5 for PCS to PCS) and it's been gone for at least
a year. Keep it if you use around 300 minutes per month - or less.

It depends on what you want, I suppose. I had the same plan as Michael, but
I called regular customer care and told them I wanted the 750 min with free
pcs-pcs for $40 that I had been hearing about. I was on hold for about 5
minutes, and when the rep came back online, he made the switch. I ended up
paying $5 more for the 7PM start time, and I'm at $45 for my plan, plus tax.
My useage was always just under 300 minutes, and when I made the switch, I
probably only jumped up to about 450-500 minutes per month, but I didn't
want to pass up on that plan. If I were him, I'd try to get the plan I've
got, unless you don't care to spend the extra $10 each month. I felt it was
worth it, and gave me the security to double my talk time each month, if I
had to. Also, I was only one year into a two year contract when I got my
new plan. Of course, it restarted my 2 year timer, but I didn't intend to
switch anyway.

I will never give up my plan. About four years ago I was off contract and
had just managed a $250 cell phone bill from having too many fights with the
soon to be ex-girlfriend. I called up CS to cancel and they immediately
transferred me to what I later found out was retention. They credited me a
huge chunk of the overage charge and offered me the plan I still have.
For $50 after taxes and credits.
1300 anytime (1000 + 300 "Courtesy Bucket")
5000+ N+W (I think)
8P nights
Free Sprint to Sprint.
Originally told I would get Vision free for a year. It's still not being
billed.
A free phone.
I've since managed another couple phones either free or at a major discount.
Right after the Cingular/AT&T merger I took my bill down to a store and
asked if they could match it. Their first reaction was "Sure, hand it
here!" Then they took one look at it and just handed it back and said they
couldn't touch it...

CM - I was able to negotiate a customized retention plan. I doubt whether
SPCS would be so lenient as your costs are a lot lower than mine were
originally. If you can negotiate the same plan, SPCS will bind you for an
additional two years.
I'm guessing that you combined both phones onto one account, with the new
plan you changed to. It shouldn't be a problem to add a phone for $20/ more
a month. If you need find you need to add more minutes, you should be able
to bump your plan up to the next level.
As to those old phones you have, I'm glad to hear they are still working. In
saying that, you will be spending more money on them to replace the
batteries. You might as well bite the bullet and get new phones, instead of
throwing more money into the old phones. You will get more battery life with
the new phones, and possibly better coverage.
If you think you will have a chance to negotiate a new plan, you might as
well as the rep if they can throw in the phone rebates at the same time,
without extending your AA to an additional 2 years over and above the plan
change commitment.
Good luck and let us know how you do.
