Anyone know if sprint still plans to put out a phone to work on both nextel
and sprint? Curious since I know a lot of friends and family on nextel.

Until all the i's are dotted and the t's crossed on the agreement of the
merger, and the merger gets government approval, there won't be any handsets
    compatible for both providers.

Estimated time for the merger is end of 4th quarter 2005.

And the smart money is not on a hybrid CDMA/iDEN phone, but on a CDMA phone
(like the ones Sprint sells) that will do PTT with Nextel phones. Nextel is
    supposedly going to adopt CDMA.

Moto has indicated that they will build a hybrid phone. They also have a
server that will connect Direct Connect to Sprint PTT.

That's what I was referring to, the CDMA<->PTT technology. Nextel already
has it. The key will be building a link between Sprint Readylink, Sprint's
current CDMA-based PTT technology, and Nextel's DirectConnect. It would be
wonderful if people could just get a firmware upgrade to their existing
phones. And it would be a huge blow to Verizon's CDMA-based PTT service (IMHO).

Motorola announced plans to develop a CDMA/iDen phone about an hour after
the merger was announced in January. Summer of '06 was the projected
    release timeframe.

Firmware updates should be done "over-the-air". The technology exists and it
is not that difficult. I have designed products that incorporate this
functionality. You essentially need a banked flash memory with twice the
storage requirements to avoid a problem that can occur in the event of a
power loss during download of the firmware. The additional storage
requirement would increase the cost of the phone. I would be willing to pay
so that I do not have to take the phone to a Sprint store and wait over an
hour to get a firmware upgrade. I am sure that the majority of customers
would not pay for this functionality and that is the reason that it is not
    available.

I agree. If they can pull that off, it'll be a HUGE win. And maybe it can be
done within the network. I don't really know the technology involved, so I'm
    not going to speculate.

That's great, but there are a huge number of phones that don't do OTA
firmware upgrades. The technology does exist but is relatively new to cell
    phones.

That is correct. It is new to cell phones but has existed in other products
    for many years.

That is very true. Some of the customers are really scary especially at
    Sprint and Cingular Stores.
