But why should I have to pay for a service plan when the repair that was
needed fell under the one year warranty? It should have been repaired for
FREE. When one has to pay for a monthly service plan, the replacement or
    repair is not free.

Yeah, I'm not going to give all the pople I know a new email address just
for the BB. I wanted it to be seemless for everyone. I just wanted to be
able to get email and not be at my computer all day. So, yeah, that is every
15 minutes and it cannot be changed. What's the deal with that?

Not sure why I didn't do it this way but I remember there being a reason. I
dropped Nextel back in October after the BB broke the second time in under
four months. I went back to Sprint and haven't looked back.

    > I have a Treo 650 with Sprint, using Chatter E-mail and an IMAP mail

    I
    > have never, once, yet seen my BB 7100t reset itself.

I don't know what the big deal is about push email. With Snapper mail I set
the client to check my five pop email address every two hours from noon to
eight pm. If I am expecting an email other than those times I open snapper
mail and hit 'send/recieve' and a minute later it disconnects and I have my
email. During those other four times a day it checks it itself so in a way,
that's a push, no? Heck, who cares... push, pull... I still get the email,
that's all that matters and it does it during the times I am not home. My
point... what is the sense of having the BB check and receieve email if
you're sitting in front of your computer? When I had mine, in fact all the
phones I ever had, the phone is always on... 24/7. Why should the battery
drain by checking email when it's not needed? There is no point. No matter
how much you try to convince me I still believe the BBs are poor quality
    devices and are designed poorly.

    > As for the other stuff.... what do you do with your phone (BB) that it
    > breaks every two months?

The first thing that broke was the DC button... I used it litterally four
times in the first two months I had it... warranty repair. The second, the
screen went blank so I couldn't see anything. The phone worked perfectly
except I couldn't see what number I was dialing or anything else on the
screen for that matter. This was another warranty repair that happened two
months after the DC Button thing. Now, Nextel did say that I could send it
to RIM and they won't charge me for the repair but I would have had to pay
for shipping and it would take two weeks. Sorry, I'm paying $120 for voice
and data service, I'm not oaying for shipping AND waiting two weeks for the
repairs to be complete. Any NExtel sefvice center would charge me $35 had I
brought it to them since I didn't pay for the insurance but since it was a
warranty repair, why should I. It should have been replaced or repaired
regardless of weather I paid for the insurance.

Snappermail Premier - $50 one time fee (Enterprise edition $10 more)

Again, why should I have to pay, even as little as $2.99, for a repair that
should (they even told me these were covered) be covered under the warranty?
    I shouldn't have to pay a dime.

With the 'standard' battery I need to charge my i500 every four or five
days, the slim battery every two or three days and the extended maybe every
seven or eight days. The i500 comes with the slim and standard batteries. I
was lucky to get a day and a half with my 7510... unacceptable in my opinion
for a corporate device. Thank god I don't own a corporation where I needed
something all the time. But I can depend on my i500. If I reset the device
(soft reset now and all data is stiull there) every two weeks, that's a lot.
I have never had to hard reset it where I lost all the data and had to syc
    again to get it back.

Well, I heard that was one of the problems with the Treo 650. I don't have
those issues with the i500 at all. I might have to do a soft reset once in
two weeks and that's only because I get an error when I try to get on the
    net with it.

I don't have a key board on the i500. I use graffitti and it works fine for
me. The keyboard on the BB 7510 was nice, granted but it made the device big
and bulky, I didn't like that large feel on my hip. I don't even notice the
    i500 in it's leather case.

I use email... I don't need BB Messenger. It;'s the same with SMS messages.
My i500 has SMS capabilities but the software isn't built in, so what. I
downloaded a free app and bnang, now I can sms but it's useless because it
can only go to a phone. If you have a BB and want to send a message to
another BB user what are you using messenger for? If their email is so
    fantastic just email them.

    Re: Treo 650 vs Blackberry

I've heard some things wrong with the Treo 650 such as it being unstable and
a few other things but I haven't taken much note since I wouldn't buy it
anyway. The Treo 600 on the other hand I heard is very stable and as I said,
my friend likes his. I don't like the screen on the 600 though, I think it's
not as bright as the i500. The i500 has its drawbacks too, the most of which
is being small (small screen and writing area but this is a plus too) and
having only 16MB of ram (that's all available to the user) and it's running
version 4 of the Palm OS. Other than those I can't see anything wrong with
it. Since I use it as a phone with a Palm built into it I use only apps I
need and my TC as the main mobile device. It works for me, the BB 7510 did
not and I'm sorry I bought it.

    Goodnight Notan

Please try to understand that I live on a VERY limited
    income. Very tight budget.

Yes I do "think" abt my decisions a long time. I
research them. But my decisions have to be correct as
I don't have the money to just "do over". See?

Maybe you have a very good income and a $500 mistake is
no big deal to you. If that's the case than I'm happy
for you. But that's NOT the case for me.

So I apologize if this bothers you but research is the
cheap part of the process as I have more time than
    money.

So thanks for your help but please.... if my posts
bother you.... this is a free country so don't read
    them. OK?

This isn't the first time you've "berated" me for my
posts. I've ignored your remarks in the past. So why
    the big deal?

Hopefully my questions have helped others who are
trying to make decisions. Most times things are
"argued" into a solution. Debate is good

    My apologies.

I, too, like to thoroughly (sometimes *too* thoroughly!)
research products before actually purchasing them.

But, sometimes you've gotta just dive in and "do it!"
If you keep asking people what they like, you'll continue
to get different opinions, and never be able to make a
    decision for yourself.

While I can understand researching facts and figures,
I find it crazy to ask, for example, "Which should I
    buy? A 17" monitor or a 19" monitor?" That's one of
those things that's *completely* a matter of personal
opinion. What are *your* needs? How's *your* vision?
Do *you* like the way the monitor looks?

If you only go by what other people tell you, you'll
never be happy with your choice, and will, more than
likely, blame others for your mistakes.

But, again, you're right... If that's the way you want
to do things, I should stay out of it.

    Take care!

By all means, keep asking about what people think of products that
you're interested in... That's part of the reason for the existence
    of these newsgroups.

But, when it's time to make the final decision, it all up to you!

Yeah, that's a policy that has never made sense.

However, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but "the New Sprint" is
adopting this policy company wide, including for CDMA customers.
Current Sprint PCS phones will still be serviced under warranty
in-store, but any phones purchased new post-merger will be subject to
the same warranty policy as the "old" Nextel. If you aren't paying
monthly for an equipment service plan, Sprint won't repair it. You can
take it to the phone manufacturer and have them look at it, but given
I've NEVER done that before, I have no idea how that will pan out.

You wouldn't have to give out a new email address, that is, if you used your
provider provided email address... such as the
[email protected].... you just have your email provider
forward a copy of all incoming messages to that blackberry address and wham
bam thank you mam, your emails appear instantly on the blackberry.

As for POP checking....It can't be changed because it's their (blackberry's)
mail server that goes out and checks those accounts. Possibly, if you were
running your own blackberry enterprise server you could change that setting
on the server (or allow your bb users to change that setting)... but I
imagine since the providers control it they set it to 15 so that everyone
isn't checking all of their off site accounts every 2 minutes or so :-)

Understandably. Though, I never had any issues with Nextel during the 4-1/2
years I was with them... at least not till the end.. and it's wasn't "them"
I had an issue with, it was the signal in the house I moved into. Phone
showed full signal, but no one could hear me.. I could hear them, but they
couldn't hear me... walk outside, and they could hear me just fine... I'm
figureing it was a signal propagation issue (caused by all the darn trees in
the neighborhood I moved into)... figure the signal from the phone just
couldn't push through the house, through the trees and to the tower...
reason I think that is I could hear them perfectly.... but that makes sense
since the tower puts out more power than the phone does :-D

The big deal about PUSH email is that you get your email almost (in most
cases) instantly. Rather than having to wait for it. Some people want and
some people need this type of connectivity. Not everyone has or wants
instant messaging capabilities, and 3, 4, 5, etc way calls just aren't
feesible to do all day long. But if everyone can email, and do it
instantly, then everyone can know what's going on right then. Much easier to
send an email (TO or CC or BCC) to multiple people... they get it within
seconds and reply (if they need to) within a few more seconds or minutes...
rather than waiting hours... The other advantage to PUSH, ontop of getting
your email instantly, is that it doesn't really drain the battery. I
imagine most if not all of these services offing PUSH email are using IMAP
which has a NOTIFY command. Basically the device has a data connection to
the server... the data connection for the most part is always idle, until
the server sends out a NOTIFY to the device, at which point the device polls
for emails waiting... So you're not spending time, battery power or anything
checking email.. it just appears when it arrives thanks to that nice NOTIFY
command. (again, I don't know for positive, but I am imagining that most
PUSH services use IMAP technology for their PUSHing).

I can't agree with you on the BB's being built poorly. Maybe the Nextel's
were, or the ones that you managed to get ahold of were from a bad batch.. I
don't know..., but I've delt with alot of people that are very hard on their
phones and they havn't had any issues with their BB's.

Course, if you did want PUSH emal, you could do it with you i500 as long as
you had a program that supported IMAP and you had an IMAP email box
    somewhere.

While I agree with you on the fact that it should have been replaced, I also
agree with the fact of where Nextel stands.. The phone is warranteed by the
manufacturer (RIM), and they were willing to replace it, though you'd have
to pay for shipping.. that I think is piss poor.. any manufacturer that
offers a warranty should be willing to cover the shipping on that item..
especially if the issue is a manufactuer defect... But in the sense of
Nextel.. this is why they offer the $2.99/month Nextel Service Plan... it
enables you to take your phone to a Nextel service center, get it swapped,
and they'll deal with the issue of getting the unit back to the manufac for
the warranty repair.. all along you don't have to wait for the replacement
(2 weeks from RIM) and you don't have to worry about shipping costs or any
of that other "political" crap... after all, the fact that the unit doesn't
work isn't Nextel's fault.. it's RIM's... But I do understand what you were
saying... it's just a difference of opinion on how you look at who should do
    what..

    >

As I stated above, the repair is covered under warranty.. RIM's warranty..
it's too bad RIM makes their customers pay shipping when the issue is a
manufacturer defect... but that's how RIM does it... Again, you can't blame
Nextel for this, they just provide you with service. But for that mere
price of $2.99/month, you wouldn't have to worry about anything.. as long as
the device has no water or physical damage to it, Nextel will take care of
the replacement with RIM and they'll gladly give you a replacement handset
so you can be on your way without having to wait the 2 weeks that RIM quoted
    you.

Nextel phones eat batteries.. that's nothing new. Not sure if it's because
they're operated at a lower band or if it's just cause Nextel loves eating
battery acid :-D... I'm in the habbit of just charging my phone every night
anyway... everything I've read about LiIon batteries has stated that they
work better the more you keep them fully charged.. and to my experience,
that has proven true. So I continue on my path of when ever i'm near a
charger, the phone gets plugged in (unless i'm only going to be by the
charger for a couple minutes... .then I skip it)

Yea.. I've never had to reset my i500 either.. course I only use it for a
wireless modem for my laptop... never as a phone and it doesn't have any
applications other than stock loaded on it... again, it's just used for a
    modem :-D

I only have issues with my Treo when I've loaded a butt load of software on
it. If I stick to only what's needed then it's all good.. It occasionally
resets with other software on it.. but that's due to the way the programs
are written that i'm using... If I hard reset the Treo and only use the
stock programs (for email) then I seem to never have issues with it
resetting. But I'm one of those that has to have multiple programs going at
once, and I hate VersaMail.... so I have ChatterEmail for email, VeriChat
for IMing, pssh for remote server control access, upIRC for IRC chatting
(when i'm bored).... I have much more loaded on there, and I only have about
1 reset every now and then (every other day or so)... I'm used to it... and
it only does it on that Treo.. and i'm sure it's because the programs
(non-palm created) are fighting... so the device just says "screw you all,
    go away" and reboots :-D

I've become accustomed to using a qwerty keyboard.. I don't know that I
could revert to using a normal phone keypad to compose emails... Graffitti
is nice, and I loved it when I had to use it... but qwerty is just so much
faster.. and when you're doing lots of mobile email and text input, IMO it's
just the only way to go.

VersaMail sucks... and no one could convince me otherwise :-D

SnapperMail was good when I used it.. but I liked the ChatterEmail interface
better.. also... Snapper, when checking email accounts liked to turn on the
screen on my Treo, which I thought (and knew) was totally unneccesary, since
I knew Chatter didn't turn on the screen... and since the screen really
drains the battery, moreso than the data usage... I opted to just not use
Snapper, since it was a hog (I had it checking my pop email more often than
every 2 hours, so my screen was just about always on... then I discovered
how to use IMAP for PUSH email, and decided to use chatter with IMAP, since
snapper turned on the screen even with IMAP checking)....

It's like instant messenger... except between BB users. Why send an email
(which takes longer) when you can go to a list, select a name and start
chatting back and forth? Their email is great, but IMing is better when
    it's feasible to use it.

What is the free app you use on your i500 to do sms? I have been unable to
find one for mine that works. I downloaded one.. can't remember the name
off the top of my head, and it seemed to work, except that my other phone
would never receive the messages that I sent from the i500's sms
    application.
