the main thing I want to listen to is talk shows and
old time radio shows and foreign broadcast.... not so
    much music

For one thing, Sprint hasn't added EV-DO to my home area yet. While I do
travel a lot, I'm not thrilled about buying a device--whose primary
benefit over the one I currently have is EV-DO--that I cannot use EV-DO
    with in my own city.

There also have been issues regarding speed (slower than the 650) and
compatibility with certain applications. Amazingly, the back speaker is
also lower in volume than the 650's (and I don't think the 650's is all
that great). On the bright side, it appears the handset speaker volume
is improved (IMO, the Treo 650 needs VolumeCare in order to achieve
    acceptable volume).

Considering I have gotten to the point where my 650 is solid and running
well, I'm just not ready to toss/sell it and begin the process all over
again. I can at least wait till EV-DO comes to town (should be here by
the end of the year), which by then will have enough time for the 700p's
early bugs to be ironed out (hopefully).

I should note that I am "probably" a power user. I have created a custom
ROM for my Treo that is devoid of Real Player (replaced with Pocket
Tunes Deluxe) as well as other stuff I do not need. Oh, and I have
installed the FAT32 driver into ROM, so can use 4GB SD cards.

    >

Although I've gone back-and-forth between Palm and Windows CE, Palm-Size
PC, Pocket PC, Windows Mobile, and whatever they're calling it this
month, I don't see myself switching to a WM PDA phone at this point in
time. The Palm Treos, to *me*, seem better at one-handed operation (and
I'm not into voice command applications).

That being said, if I had to switch, my first choice would likely be the
700w, followed (distantly) by the 6700 (don't like slide-out keyboards).

The built-in back speaker is not really all that great. That said, I
have at times used it, particularly if it's only a talk feed.

Most of the time I use a Treo-compatible stereo headset w/mic, plus
answer button. This allows me to listen to music, as well as take phone
calls (music stops). I also use an app (HeadsetControl) that allows the
answer button on the headset to control Pocket Tunes (e.g., one short
press pauses music, one long press skips to the next track, two short
presses goes to the previous track, etc.).

This arrangement allows me to wear the (wired) stereo headset while
riding my motorcycle. I can easily control the music, as well
    as--assuming it's safe to do so--answer calls (full-face helmet). I
listened to one stream for hours like this.

I have to admit that I've never "gotten it" either, for the
reasons mentioned, and also because with the speed of technological
development, one of the two (or six) bundled components is bound to
become a dinosaur before the other, and then you're stuck with an old
appliance and new acquisition lust (which is a scourge).

But I have a question, just out of curiosity: doesn't the MP3
function run the battery down very quickly? My feeling has always been
that if I found myself in a burning building I'd be awfully
disappointed when my phone didn't work because I'd been listening to
music all day. That's probably just paranoia, but I am curious about
    the effect on battery duration.

No. I don't leave the screen on while playing music, but during one test
it lasted a good 9 hours before I got tired of testing. And that was
    before I purchased a high-capacity battery (2400 mAhs Vs. 1800--same
physical size as OEM). I should note that I didn't need the better
battery for music: by far the biggest drain is from using the phone for
voice calls, at least in my experience. Streaming will of course use
more battery-life than merely playing MP3s, but I've done it for hours
    without issue.

That hi-cap battery left me with a spare battery, should I need it
(haven't needed to use it yet though).

That scenario makes it seem as if you won't have a clue about battery
life until it's too late. The reality is that the battery meter I use on
my Treo is much more detailed than the "meters" on any of the cellphones
I can remember using (I can display battery info by percentage of life
remaining, actual voltage, or the idiot-light-like icon seen on most
    cellphones).

    Cool!

If and when EVDO comes to your town will the 700 be
able to detect it and use it automatically?

Will it be a seamless and cost-less thing to use EVDO?

    Thanks

    Great info!

I think I'm gonna get the 700p unit but get it thru the
    Sprint kiosk inside of Costco

Costco adds a lot of "value" to a new sprint
    account.... I think

Absolutely. It'll use EV-DO if available, or 1x if that's all there is.

If you are a new Sprint subscriber, yes. The cheapest EV-DO (Power
Vision) package is the same price per month as 1x (Vision). If you want
more features (TV, Picture Mail, etc.) you can move up to either the $20
or $25 EV-DO plans. At $15 per month, Sprint's pricing is IMO a good
    deal.

What, you think I hang around this NG for the free beer?! ^_^

Seriously, I've been with Sprint for close to six years now.

Then by all means please list a carrier who has better EV-DO pricing for
    new customers.

Does the other big EV-DO provider include SMS for no extra charge? Nope.

If you want to ***** about losing a grandfathered Vision plan, fine. But
you cannot claim Sprint's data pricing, for new subscribers, is high
    compared to other providers.

If you are an XM subscriber, you can listen to all the channels online.
However, I'm not sure this will work w/ Windows Mobile 5, but I' gonna give
    it a shot!
