I have had a Samsung i300 for two years and have had no problems
synching with the Palm 4.0 desktop software. I plan to now upgrade to
the Samsung i330. There is software called the MissingSynch which
allows you to synch with the Palm software and MacOSX. Do I really
need this software? Is this software necessary for all data to be
synched and programs? Lastly, are there programs that have been
backuped on my desktop computer under the Palm synch that should NOT
be installed on the new phone?

    Thanks

Unfortunately yes you do need it.

The i330 - although it attaches via USB to the computer is still serial
at heart. The stand changes the protocol.

The mac desktop palm software can't cope with it.

Or you could look for a serial sync cable from samsung that plugs into the
i330 port. Or...and I have done this. The i330 when placed in the i300
    cradle just right will sync.
