I'm ready to replace my old clunker smartphone (Kyocera 6035) with
something like the Hitachi G1000, but would like to be able to add a
GPS device
to it for mappping/routing sometime. I haven't found any mention of
this possibility anywhere, and the phone slots seem a bit limited.
Anyone know if any GPS devices can be hooked up to this phone?
Thanks for any info,
Paul

Not unless the GPS can be hooked up via the SDIO slot (and I think not, as
PocketPCMag reports the SD slot doesn't support I/O).
I'm betting not. Maybe the Samsung I700 if/when we ever release it.
Mild sarcasm, folks. It's still listed as being in the pipeline.

Yeah - that's how I interpreted that article as well. I guess I'll hang
onto my trusty Kyo-brick until the next round of smartphones appear on
the horizon.

The G1000 already has GPS built in it. We need to complain to Sprint to
allow people to develope for it.

Re: any GPS accessories work with Hitachi G1000 phone?
Tom,
I don't believe the cell-based built-in-phone GPS systems are as
accurate or have as good coverage as the satellite-based GPS devices,
such as those from Garmin.
I was hoping to hook up one of these devices to the G1000 as you can do
with many regular Palm/WinCE gadgets. It looke like the G1000 doesn't
have the necessary slots to do this.
Am I off-base in my thinking about the built-in phone GPS quality?
Thanks,
Paul

GPSOne, the phone's built-in GPS is quite accurate. Some estimates are
that GPSOne is accurate to as close as three feet!
Now, the question is if Sprint will ever release an open-API for this
system, or sell it to interested developers...

No, I don't think you are, really. Although you may find it more accurate
than you appear to believe. It'll only work on our network (of course).

Is the GPS functionality available in the G1000 out of the box? Any
websites that explain it or any included mapping software? I really
haven't seen much about this aspect of the phone. I'm guessing it
isn't deployed yet. Right?
Thanks,
Paul

Yeah, it's available and active (in the phone) out of the box. And the use
for E911 should work on *any* network, so I partially take back that it will
only work on our network. I think the commercial services, when they get
rolled out, will only work on our network.
And you're right, it's not yet deployed.

What email did you use?
A lot of G1000 users (including myself in the future possibly) would
like to get the INF file so that the G1000 could be used as a modem...

Re: any GPS accessories work with Hitachi G1000 phone?
I just went to the Hitachi website and looked under Contact
Information.
http://www.hitachi.com/Apps/hitachic.../MobilePhones/
For technical inquiries, please contact:
[email protected]
He wasn't too helpful for other questions i had, but the GPS
information seemed hopeful. I just purchased the G1000 today and hope
to have it in a few days. I currently have a Sanyo5150 and love the
fact it can connect to my laptop as a modem (without Vision). A PC
modem driver is DEFINITELY on my must have list for the G1000.
Anyone else got any news on that?
