Just make sure you get the latest software on the phone (WD29), and I
believe you will be quite happy.

I can second that. The VI16 software really stunk. The original (I
believe) software VH10 was alright. My brother still uses it because he
refuses to upgrade after he saw all the probems I had with draining
batteries and no calls because I upgraded to the VI16 software. Chances are
if you buy it new, it will have VH10 in it. If you buy it at the Sprint
store, have them upgrade the software before you leave. If you buy it at
Best Buy, Radio Shack or some other vendor, haul it over to the Sprint store
and have them put WD29 on it.

If you care about a camera, you might want to hold off and get the
A620. It's essentially an updated A500 with camera.

I also had VH10 and VI16 and didn't notice any change in battery life at
all. I did notice the serious problem of having to reboot your phone in
order to place or receive calls sometimes after the phone had been
searching for service. WD29 seems to be a very good version so far with
only the minor problem of the short mail notification ringer volume
being too low even when set to max.

I didn't lose battery life per se. Rather, in a weak signal area, my phone
would sort of freeze, in the sense that it would not make or receive calls,
but it otherwise appeared normal. The battery would then drain as if it
were in analog mode. Sometimes, in the same weak signal area, it would go
to searching for a signal and never find one, even when I was back in a
strong signal. It would never find analog or digital. This happened to me
often, as I work in the towers of downtown Minneapolis, and simply walking
around the downtown skyway system would change reception greatly. Often, I
would wonder why I had no calls and when I looked, the battery was down to
one bar and I had to reset the phone (power cycle it). WD29 fixed the
problem perfectly. It has not happened since.
As far as shortmail goes .... it SUCKS with Vision anyway. It is more of a
pain to check for a short mail and respond then it is to simply call ... or
carry a phone from T-Mobile which has VERY GOOD SMS service.
