Valley (especially Front Royal) verses Sprint?

We just drove I81 through VA, very good Verizon coverage all along it.
    Cannot comment on Sprint.

One caution to my previous message; the areas I noticed were digital, but
I do have analog capability. I did not lose coverage along I-81, but it
might have fallen to analog some places.

Where in VA? Verizon has a very good native system from roughly just
before Pulaski, VA (in the New River Valley west of Roanoke) past
Harrisonburg in the Shenandoah Valley. It's the area east (or rather,
north) of there that is in question.

VZW users formerly roamed on Sprint PCS' Washington/Baltimore coverage
in that area, which was changed in newer PRLs to use the Shentel
Cellular analog system. VZW has bought Shentel and is converting it
to CDMA...we were all just curious how far along that conversion is
(Harrisonburg to I-66/Winchester, and along 66 towards VZW's
    Washington, DC coverage).

I was last in Winchester in July and Luray in June. Verizon (old
Shentel) was analog at that time. If it has been upgraded to digital,
it has been in the last month or so.

I'll drive up that way in the near future to see how the digital
    conversion has progressed.

    Dave,

Since it's in your neck of the woods, do you know if there have been any
coverage improvements on Verizon's digital side (or, really, ANY improvements)
along the Route 3 corridor through Orange? Also, is Culpeper still entirely
Alltel? It would be nice if VZW would acquire a PCS license out there and
make an entry into that area...

I live not far from Winchester. The rep at Apple Blossom mall told me that
Verizon digital will be in place in NW Virginia by October 1.

We drove all along I-81 in VA. We never lost coverage, but SOME could
have been analog. Every time I looked it was digital, but I slept some
too... I guess I cannot answer your real question. Sorry.

I travel into this area every weekend. Verizon bought the old Shentel
analog system, and says they will convert it to part of the DC system in the
fall. I've been anxiously watching for the signal to go digital but, as of
this last weekend, it is still analog.

Ok, thank you Donald. This is something for me to keep my eye out for and
perhaps next year reconsider the options. It would be nice to have coverage
in my house! Right now, if I stand by the upstairs bedroom window I have 2
    - 3 bars. Also, there are many pockets of no service areas along I-66
between Linden and Haymarket. I hope Sprint and/or Verizon can improve on
    this.
