I am seriously considering buying a Kyocera 6035 SmartPhone and am
looking for opinions and reviews from people who have actually owned one.
I know there are more advanced models out there with more memory, color
screens, and faster modems, etc. I have my reasons for choosing the most
simple Palm OS phone currently available. What I want to know are the
things that aren't listed in the specifications.

How visible is the screen in the sunlight?

Has anyone had success synchronizing via the IR port?

How good is the reception compared to other phones, with or without Palms
    built in?

I am currently a Verizon subscriber. Is there anything about the Sprint
PCS version of the phone that would be a good enough reason to switch?

    How sturdy is the phone?

Is the little flap easily broken off?

Anything else you can think of.

I own one & am in love with it. It gets great reception, and is visible in
most any light. However it does have an inverted backlight (Text glows,
background is black, my only comlaint). But I installed a hack that inverts
it so that the backgroubd glows. I first bought it when I needed a cell (My
current one dird) and that was the one with the best battery life for the
price. However I quickly got used to the Palm functions! The IR HS works
good, there jsut is not a lot of range with it. You cannot use the IR port
to make a data call with a laptop. However if you connect it to a computer
via the data port on the bottom (Either serial or USB) then you have a
cellular modem! It is only 19,200, but that is better than nothing. Over
all I am happy with the Kyocera 6035.

Seeing as it is a discontinued phone, replacement batteries may be
    hard to come by.

Re: Requesting Opinions on Kyocera 6035?

i owned this phone for a month or so about 2 years ago. for its many
useful features, it served me well. there are so many palm apps/hacks
to dl to it. it synced with my mac too, though the folks who sold it to
me at office depot basically said, "ya right! you can't use that with a
mac!" HA :P. anyway, reception was pretty decent from what i remember
(but that extended antenna sure is long!) and though browsing speed was
slow, it worked. the pop3 mail client (i think it was eudora) worked
well too. i, too, downloaded the hack to invert the backlight...the
flip, or flap as you call it, was pretty sturdy and i think you could
answer calls with it open or closed. though it was a palm phone, it
sure didn't look delicate like palm phones now, such as the samsungs,
toshiba, hitachi, etc. this thing was, well, a brick. literally.

that said, my friends kept making fun of me for having a garage opener
for a phone. that's what propelled me to ebay this baby...but it was
fun while i had it the end.
(sorry, don't mean to discourage you from buying one. if it has the
features you need, by all means, go for it.)

FYI: Qwest models of the 6035 are subsidy-locked just like the SprintPCS
versions. Don't buy either if you want to use Verizon.

You might not have to switch, if Sprint carries the new Treo 600... This
phone has to "one up" the 7135.

Not really. The Treo is, I think, a digital-mode-only phone. When
travelling, I want to have access to analog as well as digital modes.

Even more important, though, is the fact that the Treo 600 doesn't seem
to have Grafitti. I don't want to hunt and peck. Grafitti works
beautifully for me, and I won't give it up.

Check out Sprint's Webpage, there are like 2 or 3 Palm OS Phones, like the
Smasung I330, color screen, 16mb Ram... Really nice!

Re: Requesting Opinions on Kyocera 6035?

I liked my 6035 but prefer my current Samsung
i330, for three reasons. More memory, bright
backlit color screen, and TealDoc uses the FULL
screen (including graffiti area!) for reading
books. That last point is so important to me
that I probably won't consider switching till
something comes along with as much text display.

The I330 is the one I want when my 6035 dies. (I just hope the price dropps
    by $250+ before that happens)
