I have two Motorola Startac 7867 dual band phones. Both
were working fine when I took them to Sprint for software
and PRL updates. After they were done, both phones had
software version 7058 and PRL 10019. My wife's phone, however, had lost
its analog mode. The only modes it shows now are Sprint PCS and
Automatic. I discovered this immediately and showed it to the Sprint
PCS rep. They all insisted they could not have caused this and could
not come up with a way to correct it.
Rather than waste my time arguing with them, I am asking my question
here. Does anyone know how this could have happened?
Can I correct this? Is it something they can do for me at Sprint PCS,
or should I sent the phone back to Motorola?
Since I do not read this group regularly, please respond to
[email protected]
Thanks,
Rob Keenan

Re: Sprint PCS lost the analog mode on my Startac dual band
It's possible that the PRL update changed your roaming provider from
AT&T Analog to Verizon Digital, hence the loss of Analog.
This would make sense in an area that is poorly covered by Verizon
Analog, but Verizon Digital is very strong.

I don't know. What happens if he needs to roam outside his area where
only analog is available?

Are you saying that her phone changed and yours did not? I do not
see any need for analog only mode. My wife's phone is always in Sprint
PCS only mode.

Maybe something got messed up in the firmware upgrade. try having them
reprogram it again.

I am sure that did not happen.
The Startac was only dual band, it would not receive the 800MHz CDMA
"digital" spectrum. 'Automatic" will search for Sprint PCS first, then
go down the PRL list for the first available 800MHz analog signal.
I'm trying to remember if the Startac had an analog only, I know with
the single band, it had 'home only' and 'automatic' (from when going
form area to area was concidere droaming).
Maybe the 7058 changed the wording, I know it made improvements with the
RF performance (just about the only SW update to help with dropped
calls). If you had 7058 before (if you've had an update done in the
past 2 years) then only the PRL was updated.

If the software update didn't go though correctly, the phone would not
power on at all. Trust me, I know form experience. ;-)

Re: Sprint PCS lost the analog mode on my Startac dual band
What they did was modified the PRL which determines what service the
phone will be allowed to provide. They indeed removed the analog
function for sure because Sprnt does not offer analog.
As long as you have the phone operated on Sprint, you will have no
analog.

Re: Sprint PCS lost the analog mode on my Startac dual band
Well when I am out of range I like to get analog roaming (I don;t like
the charge) but if it is emergency it is better than no service.

Currently, Sprint is offering $5/month for roaming, if your roaming
minutes do not excede half of your anytime minutes.
For me, it's worth it.

Don't forget Larry, that option is only available for those customers
in SPCS metro areas, not for customers who are in an affiliate's area.

>=20
Actually, the rule is half of your *total* minutes for the month. =20
Roaming minutes aren't charged to us according to when they happen, so=20
we don't calculate based on it, either.
