Hi. I'm about to upgrade to a new phone (thinking about the A650) and
am hoping to be able to stay with Sprint. I travel in Europe and Asia
several times a year and would like a phone that will work there as
well as in the USA. I believe that I need a GSM compatible phone to
work in most of the countries I will be visiting, but I'm not sure I
understand how that technology relates to the phones available from
Sprint PCS. If I buy a dual mode/tri band phone, will it work in
these GSM countries?
What should I be looking for when selecting a phone?

Sprint Dual mode means Analog & Digital. The digital is CDMA, not at all
compatible with GSM. I don't know of any Sprint phones that would be
good for Europe. Lately I have read lots of horror stories about even
GSM phones bought stateside not working in Europe due to the GSM being
on a different frequency. Check with Travel/Travel Agenct websites, they
might have better information.

I suggest to a lot of people, try it, if it doesn't work, most countries
(esp in Europe and east Asia) offer pre-pay phones.

You are being totally disingenuous and dishonest then. Sprint phones
will 100% not work in Europe on GSM and you know it.

The Europe and east-Asia comment was in reference to the pre-pay phones.
Maybe I should have clarified, that, too. Where I am, I dealwith a lot
of people who travel to other countries, Latin America, the Carrebean,
South America etc..
I cann't give them a definite answer on if it will work down there, I'll
never promote what I said for someone who does not have service, or
someone who is adding a line, but if you already have a SprintPCS phone,
whats the harm in trying it there? When I travel overseas, I bring my
5150 to see if it works. ($2.50 / min from Bermuda!)

Also, SprintPCS does lease GSM phones, they have plans that will let you
take them to the specific areas asked about, but its not cheap, almost a
ripoff (although you are internationaly roaming).
If you're looking for new service that will allow you to go to those
areas a lot, then I would recommend going into a service other than
SprintPCS, one that offers GMS, such as Cingular. If its a once in a
while thing, and/or the GSM service is poor / not available in your
area, it may be more cost effective to go pre-pay while traveling.

Re: Best Sprint Phone for Domestic & International Use
You need a European standard GSM phone and a prepaid sim. Look at most any
corner store at your destination.

AND, there is no CDMA coverage in Europe. None.

Re: Best Sprint Phone for Domestic & International Use
If you're travelling in Europe, you best get an unlocked TriBand GSM phone,
which works on 3 GSM frequencies 900/1800/1900 MHZ. You can find these cheap
on ebay..i recently bought an Ericsson T68 for $60. When you get to your
destination in Europe, by prepaid SIM cards from providers like Vodafone,
O2, Tmobile and so on. Rates will be a lot cheaper that way. If you travel
from place to place, just keep using local prepaid SIM cards. Do not lease
an international phone from Sprint, it's not economical to. Rates can go up
to as much as $2.00 per minute..both incoming and outgoing.
Now i do know that you can roam with a SprintPCS dual band CDMA phone in
Hong Kong, Guam and New Zealand, but not assuredly.

Sprint phones will not work in Europe and Asia. I have few friends who travel
a lot outside of U.S.
One of them has AT&T, his phone works great outside os U.S. but in U.S. AT&T
does not have good GSM coverage, so he has TDMA phone also, I think he
mentioned that he had same number worldwide and same number for both phones.
I am not sure how he is able to have same number on both phones.
Another friend recently got T-Mobile and he travels to Europe a lot, he
is happy with the servie so far.
Another friend who came from India to U.S. was able to roam on cingular
network here.
All of them have Tri-Band phones since different countries use different
frequencies for GSM.

Please visit http://earthroam.com as it will answer most
of your questions.
Sprint does offer worldwide GSM roaming, but you need
a separate GSM handset.
There are CDMA/GSM handsets coming, but not for a while.
SprintPCS has _very high_ rates for GSM roaming, second
only to Nextel. You are better off using Telestial HopAbroad
for international use, with a recording on your SprintPCS
phone that has your HopAbroad number.
SprintPCS does have CDMA roaming in many CDMA
countries, but mainly in the Carribean.
Verizon has better GSM roaming rates than Sprint, and
has a lot more coverage. T-Mobile has the cheapest
European roaming rates.
Again, it's all detailed at http://Earthroam.com

Sprint will do you no good outside the US except with a special
handset (visit the Web site for more info).
I have several friends who use T-Mobile when traveling to Europe
and it's great.
But you might want to check out local cell phone rentals wherever
you're going. I have something set up for when I travel to Japan that's
very cost effective, but before I'd set that up I used local rental cell
phones and that was MUCH less costly than any international roaming
arrangement I've seen.

Could you elaborate on that please? You say "dual band" -- do you mean
analog and PCS, or 800Mhz and PCS? And what do you mean "but not
assuredly"?

You gotta tell sprint where you are going! T-Mobile doen't even let you go
wherever you want anytime.

Re: Best Sprint Phone for Domestic & International Use
Pick up a cheap "world band" GSM handset and pop in a local prepaid SIM
... international roaming really isn't worth it in a lot of cases
(couple bucks a minute).
