How many of you use discontinued phones?

I was just wondering -- with the Sanyo 4900 and Samsung A500 now being
discontinued -- how many of you users still use older, discontinued
phones? How long have you had your phone... does it still perform well?
How long will a manufactorer support a discontinued model?

I have the Sanyo 4900, which I believe to be a great phone and I am sad
to see it being discontinued.

Amazing that I'm agreeing with Phillippe on anything here ... but I have the
same scenerio, with my wife using a 2 to 2.5 yr. old 4700. Great phone, and
as long as it keeps charging up, is the perfect phone for her, as she
doesn't use the web, and barely uses the phone to begin with.

We use the 4700 & 4900--both seem to work better in fringe areas--have
also used the 5300, good phone but not in fringes, but does have tri
mode--maybe the next big improvement will be a 4900 type with tri mode

Still using a LG 5250 phone. Performs well and too cheap to get a new
phone.

I was really surprised how well Sanyo phones work on the Sprint network.
But I can't give up my SCP-4000. Sanyo's phones made since are just
too clunky.

If I ever need to roam on 800 Mhz digital, though, I'll be SOL. But
never have. Sprint's preferred roaming partner is AT&T here anyway.

We replaced a broken Kyocera 2255 with a refurbished Kyocera 2255. The phone
had not been officially sold by Sprint for several months prior, IIRC.

The replacement's screen is dying, but it only cost $30 to buy the phone, so
we are going to write it off and buy a new phone soon.

To answer the other part of the question - it seems that generally,
manufacturers offer at least rudimentary support for the phones long after
the carriers stop selling them.

I still have a Sanyo 4900. It has better reception than any phone
Sprint sells currently.

I did have to sell my 2G phones though, as they have screwed up my
account in the past (going from 2G to 3G and back).

So many people have and love the 4900 that I'm sure they'll be
issuing software upgrades for it and servicing it for a long while.

When my wife and I got 4900's I gave my 4700 to my friend, and my
wife's 4000 to his wife. She doesn't use the phone much, so despite the
fact that it's 2G voice, it was sufficient. Recently the battery has been
taking a charge less efficiently, so I suppose my friend will give her the
4700 and get himself a new phone.

But the point is that both phones are still being used, and I'll
stand by the 4700 completely. It's 3G voice and a terrific phone all
around. Since I don't use Vision, and don't know anyone who does, we're all
extremely satisfied with our instruments and have no reason to upgrade.

I had a Nokia 6185 forever. It was one of the good releases and was
a fantastic phone for its entire life. We have a very skilled SPCS store
near here that was always prepared to upgrade it (some stores would look at
it a year after it was discontinued as if it were some other sort of
appliance). So I was able to keep that thing in top shape until I sold it.
It's probably still being used somewhere.

Both my wife and I are still using our LG 5350's, wehave had them less
than a year after they came out and they were already discontinued.....

I have a 5150 and its been going strong since the day I bougt it.

And I don't think I'll be upgrading it anytime soon since I'm boycotting
camera phones and I can't afford a new one.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

I've had my StarTac 7867W for 3 years. It's been beat up and is still
going strong. Its only 2G, but it gets me Internet access for my
laptop. If it dies, and Sprint PCS doesn't offer any Motorola phones,
and still insists that 3G phones can't be hooked to laptops, I'll
either try to find a used 7867W and continue on with 2G, or head over
to Verizon...

Would you believe I am still using not 1, not 2, but 3 Samsung 3500 phones
on my account!
Yes, those same 3500's that everybody trash-talks...
To be honest, the history is as follows:

#1: Replaced twice in first 6 mo. no problems since
#2. Replaceed once " " " " " " "
#3. " " within the last year with a friends 3500. The
3500 was replaced after it had taked a 'quick bath' in the Atlantic, and
even survived that finally to have the earpiece die.

All of the 3500's have 'taken a liken and kept on ticken'. They have bounced
down carpeted stairs and spun accross the tile floor. They have tumbled end
over end.!

We really got our money out of these!

I still use my NP 1000, I have 2 backups, and my wife is still
using her Eagle 22 (Touchpoint 2200). My wife's startacky is still in
the drawer, so she could still use it for emergency backup, but it is
there because she wanted a better phone.
