Probably a stupid question on my part. I fulfilled my 1 yr. contract & am now
on a monthly contract w/no obligation w/Sprint. I can leave penalty free at
any time. Wish I could get a Nextel free incoming plan without a 2 year
contract (eternity in this industry & it's evolution), have been considering
moving over to Tmobile. But all and all....I can see little reason still at
this point in jumping ship. Prior to Sprint I had a very bumpy relationship
with AT&T.
I had three considerable gripes w/Sprint under my contract and they perked me
$50 credit each time. When my A460 phone died (twice), I had a new one
delivered the next day at no cost. I spent 20 minutes on the phone on hold for
80% of the time with Executive Services about a month ago.....stating I needed
a new phone and aggrivated I was calling Sprint on my dime and on hold for 20
minutes long distance. They credited me 50% of my monthly plan for a month
($37.50) as an apology-compensation for my phone bill accrued on hold.
Real world...no cellular provider is perfect.....and all in all....I got
nothing really to complain about w/Sprint. Sprint's been more than fair
w/me....and I am not sure another cellular vendor would have been as
accomodating to me....actions speak louder than words and Sprint's demonstrated
plenty of proactive action with me....

Quite a few people in here like SPCS Andrew ... It's only a few souls here
who are constantly complaining. One more thing, in newsgroups, you will
always find more complaints than kudos ... as it's the nature of the beast
of newsgroups.

Sprint does have many pluses.
* Their Nationwide Long Distance plans cost less than that of other
carriers. So if you live in Los Angeles, and travel to Washington, D.C.,
you still aren't roaming and have free long distance.
* They have some unique phones other carriers don't that some folks like.
Sprint provides good Li-ion batteries with its phones, some Nokia phones
from other carriers may have inferior Nickel batteries as default.
* Their coverage is different than other carriers, in some areas thats a
plus, in others its a minus ( where I live its infinitely better than
T-Mobile.)
* If one goes through CANCELLATION/RETENTION, one can sometimes get
a better than advertised plan, with more minutes/lower cost.
* SprintPCS a deal for a discount for Sprint long distance
on a land line.
* One can easily track their useage of minutes over the web.
* Sprint has many (some large) corporate discounts.
* They have won the war on Night & Weekend minutes, by going to
"Unlimited".
* SprintPCS is trying to be a leader in 3G wireless.

Sprint, like all cell companies has Minuses:
1. The Customer Support is the worst in the industry.
CSRs chase you off the phone, and worse. Hold times
are unpredictable and often excessive.
2. Billing errors are murder to get fixed. If one can get
to Executive Services, they are usually helpful, and dont
seem to have time limits on their calls. The problem is Sprint is
agressively making it harder to get to "Executive Services", and
seemingly has nothing intermediate between the lowest level CSR person
at *2 and Excecutive Services. One case this week took wiriting to a
State's Attorney general to get resolved.
3. Because Sprint sells so many phones, many Sprint PCS stores
techs can't keep up with all of them, a phone may need a firmware
upgrade to perform as advertised, but techs may deny it exists.
4. Many Sprint stores are always over crowded, with staff
only helpful if you're a potential new customer.
5. Like other companies, coverage may have holes in it, which the
the company is likely to deny exist. Before one switches to another
company (to Sprint or away from Sprint) one needs to verify coverage
where they live, work, and travel. Ask friends. Fully test during free
trial period.
6. Other possible downsides of Sprint are at http://www.sprintpcs-sucks.org
7. If you move, change billing plans, change phones, change web access,
Sprint can royally mess up your billing, and hit you with
unexpected charges. Sprint of course is not alone here. Years ago I quit
GTE (now Verizon) when they insisted that even though I had 2 phones -
one for me, one for my wife, they could not do it one bill.
8. Common to all cell companies: Some aspects of a phone's warranty
are not covered. If Samsung refuses to reimburse Sprint for an issue,
Sprint will not help you. Some folks say its better to buy a phone
at Macys, Sears, Radio Shack, Costco, etc as they may do better at
helping you with a hardware issue.
9. Number portability: This goes into effect on November 23, and Sprint
riled up many customers by charging a "Cost Recovery Fee" that
a) seems excessive
b) went into effect before the service was provided -
It remains to be seen which carriers will allow for easy Number
Portability, and which will require you to contact a special "800"
number with 45 minute hold times, and then charge a transfer fee.
10. SprintPCS web site offers support by email, claiming 24 hour
response. I have NEVER gotten a response in under 24 hours, usually
48-72 hours, and often the email folks have no authority to solve your
problem.

I like SprintPCS. Everything Phillipe says is true, both the good and bad.
Think of sprintPCS as WorldCom gone modern. Possibly not as bad, and
possibly worse. Lots of people with too much to do, under-trained,
under-paid running a state-of-the-art system that is understood by the
sub-contractors that built it.
If you can get past the poor customer service, you'll like it.

FWIW: I've been a customer since late '97. The only real issue I had
was the launch of Vision, which wasn't coordinated very well, and the
plans offered were unrealistic. I'm still not 100% happy that they
don't like the use of laptops on Vision phones, but it hasn't caused me
any problems.
Otherwise, no issues here, and service has been good. I don't plan on
going anywhere.

Thats the deal killer in a lot of cases.
And I think that's all due to the time limits they put on the CSRs.
They don't have the time or authority to solve problems, apparently
they're discouraged from escalating, but seriously encouraged to get
more Advantage Agreements. If Sprint ever let CSRs do their job, Sprint
could be world-clas, and it might not cost more, as users would
have their problems solved with one call.

Sprint? I like the network (it's great in every major metro area I have been to), the calling
plans are good, the phones are great, and the data network is sweet when it is not "busy or
unavailable".
I immensly dislike the Sprint people I have to talk to on the phone or in person. They are not
competent by any defintion of the word.
So, I pick a phone I will want for several years. I sign a two year contract. I pay my bill in
full over a week before it is due, and I don't have to deal with the psuedo-humans called "CSR
reps" very often.
When I do have to deal with the reps, I crack open a beer, sit in front of the TV, pop in a good,
relaxing movie, and prepare myself to have to make about 10 calls to get the problem resolved. I
try to make it into a little vacation for myself and consider it humor or parody ... much like a
Dave Barry column. Make it entertaining for yourself.
Then, if you get the problem resolved, chances are you won't have to talk to them again for another
year.
So, yes, I like Sprint. The network. I like it very much.

They've been good to us too. I don't use the Sprint phone regularly, but
the wife loves it.

I've been a loyal Sprint User for 5 years. They've been good to me the
whole time. Mistakes have been made once in a while, usually when I
moved, but they were quick to fix it either by their online contact
system or by a phone call. If you can wait for them to fix something on
your bill just send them a contact by email and they'll fix your problem
without you waiting on the phone.

I actually like Sprint. They have good service in my area...
surprisingly they also have decent service inside buildings here as
well. They recently offered me 8pm night and weekend start time, for
which I am very appreciative.
I suppose I am one of the lucky ones who have never really had an
ongoing *bad* customer service experience... but I have had heard of
them happening. I am not going to sit here and say that Sprint is
perfect... because they are obviously not... but from my perspective,
they suit me just fine.

Wow! That is one of the first positive things I have seen you say about
Sprint on here. :-) I, too, did enjoy your list of positives and
negatives.... and many of them were right on target.
I think you get a bad rap in here from some because you don't mention
the positives Sprint offers very much. Granted, the beefs you do have
with Sprint are pretty major and worthy of attention, it is also worth
it to mention positive things every once in a while. If all you post is
negative, you would be seen as a troll who just comes in to start
arguements and no one will take anything you say seriously. I think you
are a good guy upon reading more and more of your posts, and I do
apologize if I was less than pleasant to you in previous postings.

You may or may not have better luck with another provider. My advice
though is if Sprint has coverage where you need it and they offer you a
service at a price you think is fair, stay with them. Switching is only
likely to open up new problems and get you loocked into a contract with
someone you have no experience with.
I had sprint for 3 years, switched to AT&T TDMA, and while i had
different problems, i still had problems, now i'm contemplating
switching back to SPCS as soon as number portability comes around.
Why? Well, i want data services, and i also want coverage where i work
and play. Something i can't get both of with AT&T without having 2
lines of service (One for TDMA and one for GSM). I'm going to give GSM
another shot before i cancel though and see how it works out.

I had SprintPCS for less than a year, figured how to get out of the
contract.
When I first had a Samsung A400 it was junk, the home charger kept
shorting the phone out, Finally retention sent me another phone because
the sprint store that's 45 miles from my home kept giving me run around.
I went there every day for 2 weeks, wasted a lot of gas, etc. When the
Sanyo 4900 came out, I purchased it at Radio Shack with a 200 rebate for
MSN. (I use MSN anyways, figured what the hell!) And LOVED IT... in
places where my A400 sucked and dropped calls I started getting coverage
back. I became a fairly happy camper with Sprint. Mind you at this time
I *ALSO* had t-mobile, and ONLY got sprint to use for unlimited nights &
weekends (T-Mobile didn't offer this on any plan without paying an extra
$20 a month, So for an extra 30 I got an extra 300 minutes and unlimited
night and weekends) but the customer service due to some billing errors
I was getting due to haveing 3 handsets, and a recycled phone number
that was getting harrassed all the time and changed that number to a new
one made it absolutely horrid. I eventully ended up getting out of my
contract early by a post that was left here about switching to the $5.00
a month suspension plan and then canceling. Yes I liked some of the
handsets, However I prefer the GSM technology only because of the sim
card carrying my phone book. I have over 200 phone numbers I have to
keep in my phone, And GSM lets me take them from phone to phone. Now
before you slam me on this one. I should point out that one of my first
jobs when I was 15 was at a wireless store (then a pager store) My pager
had a different pager case on it every single day depending on outfit. I
changed the case every morning. When I got a Nokia 5185 (with PrimeCo) I
did the same thing with the faceplates every day. And have continued to
do it with my various phones... Currently use a 6610 with T-Mobile, also
have an Sony Ericsson T300, Moto T722, Vertu in Stainless Steel
(www.vertu.com) Nokia 8290 (The phone that made me switch to T-Mobile)
Nokia 7210, Nokia 3650, Nokia 3595, Nokia 3390, Samsung R225M, and
getting a V205 shortly. So basiclly depending on outfit depends on the
phone, ANd where I'm going. I use one phone for diner, another for the
dance clubs, one for work, another for business trips, another for
business diners... hey give me a break, I'm a gay man with a flare for
accessorizing.
I will point out based on both carriers I've been with, and feedback of
the cingular store I work at. If it says Samsung on it, avoid it. My
lover works for Best Buy and says the same thing about the Samsung DVD
players come back the most for repairs. As do the flat screen monitors.
So basiclly for me, Sprint is a OK carrier, I would give them 6 out of
10, only losing 1 point for not making it easy to switch hard ware the
way GSM does, The rest based on customer service.
Of the carriers I've heard about, I hear the most complaints in the
Chicago market about Nextel's rates, and AT&T's GSM network being junk.
The people I do hear complain about Sprint have a Samsung Phone, when I
sugest a Sanyo, since the 4900's are almost free anymore, when they
switch to that, they stop griping.
