Sprint PCS today said it will offer Virgin Mobile USA's pre-paid service in
550 of its Sprint Stores nationwide. Virgin Mobile USA, a joint venture
between the Virgin Group and Sprint PCS, offers pre-paid mobile phone
service through Sprint PCS's network targeted at the youth market. Some
analysts see MVNO operations like Virgin Mobile as outsourcing for larger
carriers. This deal will effectively let Sprint PCS launch a pre-paid
service, using its MVNO partner, and kick-off a marketing blitz at the youth
market. Sprint PCS does not operate a pre-paid service under its brand.
Virgin Mobile U.K. has attracted 3 million subscribers in less than three
years of operation. Earlier this month Sprint PCS signed an MVNO deal with
Qwest Communications.
