Just curious as to what the "i" stood for in the Nokia 3585i, and how is
it different from a regular 3585?

The normal 3585 has a Web Browser and J2ME/Java support. Sprint
removed these and thus had to give the phone a new model name, 3585i.

Yes, but the main reason is that it made it E911 compliant.

I won't look too deeply into product names and numbers.... they are all
    fabrications of their marketing departments.

Well, actually Nokia uses a standard numbering system where the first
two digits of the model number indicate the product line, and the last
two indicate the technology used, for example 80 for 800 MHz CDMA
only, 70 for 1900 MHz CDMA only, or 85 for CDMA tri-mode like the 3585i.

Sprint's prior Nokia phones were the 2170 and the 5170 that only did
1900 MHz CDMA (and, I believe, 800MHz analog, but no 800MHz CDMA).

With Nokia, the letters don't always mean the same thing. Like, the
3285 that Alltel and Verizon have sold is model 3285AT, if I'm not mistaken.

Qwest and US Cellular sell the 3285V, which is the same phone with built-
    in vibrating alert.

In the past, the "i" has meant "built-in web browser" where prior
releases of the same model didn't have one. (Think "i"="Internet"). Not
sure if that's what it means here.
