I remember, when I was a kid (Yes, I have a VERY good memory!),
and had a fight/argument with my parents, I felt it necessary
to always get "the last word" in.

After a number of times, my father felt it was time to put a
stop to this, and started to get the last SLAP in. (Yes, even
to this day, I'm a firm believer in smacking a kid, when absolutely
    necessary.)

I'd like to invite all you kids over to my house, to get the
    last word in!!!

My parents smacked me when I needed it, and they certainly allowed the
schools to do so as well. It didn't happen often. It's good for ya.

I'm thinking that the 70's or 80's saying, "Have you hugged your kid
today?" should be changed to "Have you smacked your kid today?" <g>

Dude Sorry but I think hitting your kid is wrong. I think that sometimes
it gives the kids the wrong idea ya know. They say well hell my dad hit
me it must be ok to hit someone then. So they go ahead and do it. I
don't think this procesess conciously but subconciosly. That and when
they get older it can lead them into abuse...... Not saying that the
parent abused the child ever but when the child gets older the abuse
sometimes starts to happen. Sorry this is just my veiw.

I didn't mean to open the "Should I hit my kid?" can of worms.

As a kid, I was never abused, never punched, never beaten.

    I was occasionally smacked!

It got my attention, something that, apparently, my folks couldn't
    get by any other means.

For me, it worked. For others, it might not.

My post's implication was that some of these bickering kids need to
be smacked... Maybe I missed the mark.

I remember other parents I talked to growing up that they would comment
how well behaved I was in public, and comment that my friends must be
orphans, because no child with RESPONSIBLE parents, would ever act that
    way..

And now that I'm married, and I see my sister in law's son hitting
people with the pinata stick at a picnic last night, and throwing eggs
at his uncles, etc... I ask the question

"Have you beat your brat into a F***ing coma today?"

No, that's a simple cry for attention from parents that do not give the
child enough quality time and/or don't set limits.

    When my son was 4 he was visiting a neighbors child, and acting wild;
we simply said to him "Calm down or we're leaving", he tested the limits
by continuing to act improperly, so I picked him up and we left, as my
wife said to him "We see you decided you want to leave". He was of
course upset, but learned that his parents limits were firm, and to
believe what they say. Parenting is very easy if you follow the simple
rule "Never make a threat you're unwilling to carry out"

I see other parents in Walmart who literally are teaching their child to
misbehave when they are constantly screaming "Joseph, don't touch that,
come back here", and do nothing other than repeat that refrain 5 more
times as the child trashes the toy aisle.
