In case anyone's interested the new version is 1.059SP. I don't know
what it adds/fixes yet.

Better it's not designed to stop you using it as an external modem.

If no one is saying what the new firmware does, then there's a greater
than zero chance it locks out modem functionality.

I doubt Sprint would release new firmware on a discontinued (or soon to
be discontinued) phone so they could lock out the modem functionality.
Why does everyone start to panic about that every time new firmware is
released? Have any of the firmware upgrades locked out the modem
functionality? I don't think so.
By the way I heard unofficially that the new 4900 update fixes a roaming
problem with the phone. That's all.

I thought that was controlled by the PRL ?

No not entirely. The PRL just gives the phone a list of systems to roam
on. The software in the phone can affect the way the phone will roam.
Apparently some 4900's were not able to roam at all or had poor roaming
signal performance due to a software bug.

Re: New Sanyo 4900 software update available
This could be a fix for the phone going into digital roam mode when in
fact it's not even capable of doing this. I've seen mine display
"Digital Roam" without actually being able to place a call while in
this mode. It might keep the phone from doing this.

Re: New Sanyo 4900 software update available
The 4900 is in fact capable of digital roaming in the 1900 Mhz band.
That does not necessarily mean that Sprint will have a roaming agreement
with that carrier though.

Doh... forgot about that. Good point. I wonder who it would have roamed
on then in Seattle? Must have been Quest (amy 4900 is an add-a-phone as
a backup)

Typically, PRLs are updated over-the-air, while software
updates are an in-store process.

How are software upgrades done for this phone:
In-store only
Or
Over the air?
Thanks

Firmware is store only, except for Palm Phones,
PRL can be over the air or in the store.

Just a minor detail: Palm phones get *phone* firmware updates in a store.
Those phones that can update the Palm OS (and, actually, I'm not sure any of
ours do), can be done just like any other Palm OS PDA.
